Reds Trout Snook And Mangos In Tampa Bay


Captain Jay Schroeder of CJ Flats Saltwater Charters reports Redfish were scattered along the mangroves on the high tide near 4th Street this week. Strong northeasterly winds pushed large amounts of floating grass and debris into the backcountry making casting with artificials near impossible; however conditions were great for live bait under a cork or deadsticking cut bait. Finding live bait remains easy, with diving pelicans repeatedly marking the spots. Shrimp too were aboard the Ms. Guided but Pinfish in the shallows made for expense bait.

Trout were stacked up along the grass flat edges in 3-5’ of water and readily accepted a 3” Gulp! alternative on a 1/4 oz Mission Fishin jig head. The Trout ranged from 15-20” with the occasional Gator greater than 20”. Under-slot Gag Grouper and Mangrove Snapper also found the Gulp! irresistible, and made for constant action in Tampa Bay. This year has been one of the best for Snapper in the Bay…

Without a doubt Snook have been the most targeted of the inshore species the last few days, with the 1st of September marking the season opener.
