It's been a typical October so far - mostly clear, slightly windy days with temperatures decreasing incrementally throughout the month, but still in the 80s every day. We've had 100+ Trout days with nary a redfish spotted (get it?) and huge redfish days without any trout. Most common this time of year is having plenty of shots at all of our different inshore species, whether you are fishing with a fly rod or casting bait. Chris says the trout are biting well but there's lots of reds in the marsh and it's just so hard to leave them!
John Mullen - Roswell GA caught 10 on 10/10!John Mullen got to fish with Capt. Chris Robinson on October 10th - they were waiting for conditions to be nearly perfect for flyfishing that week and if you look closely at the photo there's barely a ripple on the water. John landed 10 Redfish on his fly rod, the fish averaging around 5 lbs each.
Capt. Tommy Robinson is having a successful fall fishing out of Key West, catching Bonefish as well as Permit and plans to stay there fishing with some of his regular clients until nearly the middle of November. (He's coming home this weekend for a visit, Yay!)
Can't say too much about the Offshore recreational fishing right now as we haven't had much action here, although I hear the trips that have gone out have done well. I did see an enormous Cobia on Capt. Clint's cell phone the other day that weighed 75 lbs but you'd have to ask him about that. I do know that historically the deep sea fishing out of Apalachicola is fantastic in the fall.
November promises more of the same, clear days and good fishing. I know some redfish guides who are waiting impatiently on some northerly winds to pump up their action vs the east winds we have had so far in October. Plan to fish successfully throughout the month in shallow water especially.
Local Events - The 1st weekend in November is traditionally the weekend for the annual Apalachicola Seafood Festival. This year the opening day of this 2 day event falls on Halloween! There will be 2 headline musical artists this year and a return of the cooking contest. Don't miss The Oyster Roast on Friday evening 10/31 in downtown Apalachicola, sponsored by the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce. All you can eat seafood - but seating is limited. For tickets call the chamber office 850-653-9419.
