Bay Scallop Season Looking Good

Happy 4th of July!

Capt Jay With scallops

In holding with a long-standing 4th of July tradition, my family made the short voyage northward from Tampa to the land of rivers that few can pronounce and once we passed the Pasco / Hernando County Line, everyone turned towards the sky hoping for the sun. The last few days had been marred by West South West winds and record rainfalls. For those in the know, the 1st of July marked the opening of the Bay Scallop Season, and the Hernando / Pasco County Line is the southern most end of the legal harvest range. Unfortunately weather conditions had made it impossible till now…

Friday provided a break in the weather which allowed for the CJ Flats Annual Family Scallop Scouting Extravaganza. Despite the recent amount of rain, water conditions were phenomenal with the average temperature around 80 degrees and visibility top to bottom in depths as great as 12 feet. Bay scallops were abundant at multiple spots at multiple depths with shallowest being 6 feet. The only difficulties in diving for Bay Scallops this year was convincing my son Jacob that this was a “Scouting” trip and to only take a couple from each spot. Even with several short stops at various sites, we had our 2 gallon per person limit by 10:00 AM and enjoyed a wonderful dinner of Crab-Stuffed Bay Scallops on the half-shell that evening.
