Light Winds Improves Fishing

Compliments of Mosquito Creek Outdoors, Apopka Florida

Although the weather this past week was stunning, sight-fishing conditions still have room for improvement. Water levels have dropped a little and the turbidity has decreased, but northerly breezes dominated making fishing tough.

My first trip this week was a paddle adventure into the west side of the Banana River No-Motor Zone with Roland Van Arsdale from Melbourne. The wind at first was manageable from the northwest at about 10 knots, but quickly switched directly out of the north at about 15 knots. Even though the conditions were tough we still sighted a good number of fish, but the fish were spooky and connecting with a decent cast limited our catch to one slot size sea trout and some hard head catfish, very tough day to say the least.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of spending the day on the north Indian River Lagoon with Debby and Garrett Digman for Lake Mary, Florida. Debby won this charter as a door prize at the Mosquito Creek Outdoors Ladies Fishing Clinic, and she was excited about testing her newly acquired skills. This was also Garrett's third attempt at catching his first redfish, after two previously unsuccessful trips with different local guides, so the pressure was on.

We started the day with a visit to the Port St. John power plant to take advantage of the last open day before the manatee regulations close the area for the winter, and the ladyfish were chewing. Many anglers often overlook the aerobatic speed and agility of the ladyfish, but judging by the excitement displayed by Debby and Garrett, they do not know what there are missing. After an hour of playing with the ladies we headed to our first spot where we commenced to catch redfish, ending the day with nine.

Next week is a busy week both off of and on the water. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I'm teaching at the Mosquito Creek Angler's Improvement Clinics in conjunction with the Coastal Angler Magazine Boating and Fishing Expo at the Volusia County Fair Grounds near Deland. Both Captain Chris Myers and myself will conduct the clinic two times daily, and we have free samples of RipTide and D.O.A. Lures, Woodies Rattles and rattle Hooks, and Daiichi Bleeding Bait Hooks for attendees while supplies last. I will also be doing a seminar on paddle fishing in the Banana River No-Motor Zone on Friday. In addition to these classes, we will be holding a Hook Kids on Fishing Clinic on Saturday where the first 100 kids who complete the program will receive a new fishing rod and reel and a tackle box compliments of Anglers For Conservation and other sponsors. There is a lot to see and do at the Expo, so come on out and join us in the fun.

Then on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I will be down in Sebastian for my 22nd annual flounder fishing excursion, so I will let you know how the bite was next week.

As always, if you need information or have any questions, please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,

Oversized Trout And Bull Redfish

Drew Kelso with 20 lb redfish caught on a fly rod.

It's the week before Thanksgiving and here in Apalachicola we have all the doors & windows thrown wide open to be better able to
appreciate the gorgeous weather we've been having lately. Weather that has spurred the Bull Reds to stack up like cord wood and oversized trout to be more of a regularity than an oddity. The only thing we seem to be missing are the lucky anglers who could be catching these big & plentiful fish. We're all just looking at each other wondering why so many people are missing out on some of the best shallow saltwater fishing of the year. Of course there's probably a cold front in the forecast but with no appreciable rain fall in recent memory the water is gin clear and very productive.

November 3rd, Larry Crenshaw's group Bay fished with Capt. Jr. Holland and of the numerous trout they caught, one weighed an official 8 lbs and measured 28" in length. Trevor Juneau (Atlanta & St. George Island) caught his first 10 lb Redfish the same day with his Dad Les & Capt. Chris. Drew Kelso from Little Rock Arkansas has fished with Capt. Chris Robinson four days in the last 2 weeks (Nov 6-15) and has caught everything from 25 lb redfish to little tuny (aka false albacore, bonito) which are a total blast to cast at & catch, if you like fast action fish. He's putting together a slide presentation for his flyfishing club back in Little Rock. Charlie Walter from Sheridan WY and David Craig from Tallahassee FL also are in the midst of their yearly fall trip with Chris and with Capt. Jason Rucker. According to their Redfish photos they are having a personal record/banner fall too.

Capt. Chris reported finding the mother lode of Redfish recently in a curious manner. He was poling his flats skiff in shallow water searching for redfish when he noticed something kept bumping his push pole. On closer examination he found a group of about 5 redfish regularly attacking his push pole every time it splashed into the water. Or, maybe Stiffy Push-Poles are just redfish magnets!!

Capt. Tommy Robinson is due home this week from 2 months of fishing in the Lower Keys for Permit and Bonefish with clients and he's already gearing up mentally for February - April there. This fall fishing trip has been well worth doing with some personal records caught. Of course he'll only be home for a day before he leaves again to go deer hunting but that's why I commonly refer to myself as a Fish-wife & hunting widow.

December Fishing Forecast - Locals can attest to the fact that fishing on the warm sunny days we normally have in the month of December can be truly worth the effort. Fish seem to respond more to the conditions than the date on the calendar so if you have the luxury of spending some time here in the winter months, you can take advantage of all the best days. Trout & Reds should be abundant as well as striped & hybrid bass on days when you'll need to bundle up.

Real Estate News - The owner has just Reduced the price on the lot we have listed in Summercamp to less than the other comparable lots. http://www.blogger.com/
This is a beautiful lightly wooded lot in a gorgeous new waterfront community.

On another note - thank you to everyone for the overwhelming response about the Lake Lanier/Apalachicola River Drought situation. We appreciate the additional facts & figures supplied by those of you the most affected by the severe drought conditions. We are all faced with the responsibility of trying to find an equitable best case solution to this problem and to become stewards of the tri-rivers system. This is admittedly the farthest thing from a political forum and I apologize to those of you I may have offended in the process of trying to get some attention shown on us regarding this matter - it was not meant to downplay the seriousness of your situation. This is also not a religious forum, but if prayer works I'm in!

Torrid Bites And Cooler Days

November 10, 2007 - Torrid Bites and Cooler Days
The torrid bite of the fall mullet run continues in the Indian River of Brevard County from north to south ... and even though late autumn is now bringing us windier and cooler days, the action is still blowing white hot. In the midst of it all, the guides of Native Sons are leading the charge!Capt. Roland has been concentrating over the past month on the breeder redfish, snook and tarpon stacked in Sebastian Inlet in south Brevard County. When the winds and waves permit, he has been joining the feeding frenzy of the outgoing tides in the inlet by drifting live pinfish, mullet and croakers. Most of the action has been east of the bridge, through the mouth of the inlet, and out to 'Monster Hole.' This annual feeding feast should continue through Thanksgiving weekend. (A word of warning; these inlet drift trips are reserved for “the few, the proud and the brave” … those faint of heart need not apply.)Capt. Rocky has been enjoying the hot action triggered by the massive schools of migrating mullet in northern Brevard County near the Titusville area. The key to successful trips has been locating the mullet school being pounded by hungry fish and presenting them with the right bait (finger mullet). It is not uncommon to find redfish, trout, tarpon, snook, ladyfish, jacks and even bluefish all feeding in the same location and at the same time. Aaron and Chandler were the fortunate ones to be a part of a two boat "charter war" between Capt. Rocky and Capt. Don off NASA flats this morning. Both boats produced impressive fish with the 'Flat Broke' (Capt. Rocky's boat) edging the 'Is and Boy' (Capt. Don's vessel) 17 to 9 on redfish, including the largest fish of the day, a monster 50 incher. Capt. Don won the trout contest by a 3 to 2 count. He also boated a couple of difficult species for style points - a blowfish, horseshoe crab and a live, natural sponge. The Flat Broke had two triple hitters and one double hitter in the four hour Battle Royale. In all fairness to Capt. Don, somebody may have stealthily snuck a couple of bananas into his ice chest placing a partial curse on his charter. (Pictured below, from left to right, Capt. Don, Chandler, and Aaron.)

Pictured below is Toby Boian from Bristol, Tennessee and one of his six redfish. Toby also caught several fine trout and a ladyfish the size of a baseball bat during his charter earlier this week. Also spending a day on the Indian River near Titusville with Capt. Rocky was Christian Oyler, one of our servicemen home on a short leave from the Navy. Christian took back to the USS Nimitz tall tales of epic sea battles with redfish after redfish after redfish. All were caught on light spinning tackle in clear, shallow water. The largest redfish was a real torpedo weighing close to 25 pounds. (Note the size of Christian’s smile in the picture below). Finally, anchoring this weeks fishing report, is another chap named Christian, who, along with his father Marco and good friend John, were also guided by Capt. Rocky. These bravehearts hailing from California had a grand time catching a number of redfish and spotted trout on their half-day charter in Titusville waters. Christian, pictured below, wanted to make sure that it was recorded in the captain's log that he caught four of the six redfish on the day, including the largest fish.
