New Map !!!

I placed a new link to Boat Ramps of Southwest Florida on my site today. This new map stretches from Engelwood to Florida Bay and includes Charlotte Harbor, Fort Myers, Naples, and Marco Island. Look for the link to this map and all the other Florida Boat Ramps maps in the side bar on the right side of the page.

Tampa Bay

I spoke with Clearwater Bait & Tackle in Clearwater today. They were telling me that a high, mid-afternoon tide , is bringing good numbers of redfish to the bridges on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Fish shrimp on the bottom, on the down current side of the bridges, to catch redfish. Also look for reds on the oyster bars just south of where the old power plant stood at the top of the bay, and along mangrove shorelines, during these high tides. Flounder are biting Tsunami jigs around creek mouths and mangrove shoreline with good water flow and a mud bottom. Schools of spanish mackerel are in the open waters of Tampa Bay. Fish for them early morning, late afternoon, and during peek tidal movement. I also spoke with Larry at Mastry's Bait & Tackle Inc in St Petersburg today. He told me that big schools of tarpon are in the mouth of Tampa Bay and along the beaches. Crabs and greenbacks are the best baits. For more information contact;

Jupiter Inlet is Full Of Mango's

I spoke with Tommy at Jupiter Bait & Tackle today. He was telling me that fishing has been a little slow lately except for mangrove snapper in the inlet. His customers are going to the inlet with four dozen live shrimp, then coming back a couple of hours later and buying four dozen more. Look for the mango's along the rocks and keep you bait near the bottom. For more information contact;

Titusville: Every Thing is Biting

I spoke with Austin at Doc's Bait & Tackle in Titusville this morning. He was telling me that the bite is good for just about any fish you want to target. Redfish are active in the Indian River Lagoon and the Intercoastal Waterway. Austin has been using artificials exclusively lately with Berkly's 3" Gulp Shrimp in the New Penny color, and the MirrOlure 19MR MirrOminnow being his favorites. Cobia and king mackerel are on the beach out side of Port Canaveral. Marker 8A has been a hot spot. Free line a live pinfish around structure to catch cobia, and troll a ballyhoo with a bright skirt, bluerunner, or other live bait for the kingfish. Bottom fishing in 240 ft of water is very productive. Red grouper and gag grouper are hitting pinfish and croakers fished near structure. Snapper are also biting in the same area. Austin caught a 26lb red snapper last week on a croaker. Amberjack are holding above the structure. A butterfly jig or any live bait will catch amberjack. For more information contact;

Another Boat Ramp Map

I added another map to Florida Boat Ramps this morning. This one is for West Central Florida and stretches from Hudson to Englewood. It includes boat ramps in Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, St Petersburg, all of Tampa Bay, Sarasota, and Venice.

Homosassa Has Reds, Trout, and Grouper

I spoke with Nancy at MacRae's Bait House in Homosassa today. She tells me that her customers are doing very well on redfish, speckled trout, and grouper. The redfish bite is excellent around St Martins Keys. Cut bait fished around mangroves, oyster bars, and rock piles is producing some nice sized redfish. Anglers are limiting out on big speckled trout, during the tide change, around the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. Live shrimp and Berkley Gulp Jerk Shad are the best baits. Inshore rock piles and springs, in about 10' of water, are producing some keeper grouper. Larger grouper are being caught farther offshore in 25' of water around rocks and other structure. Pinfish and sardines are the bait of choice for grouper inshore and offshore. For more information contact;

Cedar KeyFishing is Good

I spoke with Leslie at Fishbonz in Cedar Key this morning. She was telling me that fishing is good, with redfish and speckled trout biting inshore, spanish mackerel on the flats and in the gulf, and cobia offshore. Look for redfish around mangrove shoreline, oyster bars, and docks. Live shrimp and cut bait are the best baits for redfish. Trout are on grass flats and drop offs. look for sand 'holes' in the grass. Trout will use these to ambush bait as it swims by. Shrimp suspended just above the grass on a popping cork is the best bait for trout. Spanish mackerel will be most prevalent around schools of bait fish. Look for birds on the water, especially if they are diving, to locate bait schools. A small silver spoon or Got-Cha Plug will catch spanish mackerel. Cobia will be around wrecks, reefs, or other structure offshore. Pinfish are usually the best bait. For more information contact;

St Augustine Fishing is Better Then Average

I spoke with Dave at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St Augustine this afternoon. He was telling me that fishing around St Augustine is better then average for this time of year. At the St Johns Co. Ocean Pier, black drum fishing is exceptional! "More 'puppy' black drum are being caught then any year I can remember." Dave told me. Shrimp, clams, and pieces of crab, fished on the bottom, are the best baits for the black drum. From the pier and in the surf, whiting fishing is fair and pompano are picking up. Shrimp and sand flees are the best bait. Good numbers of flounder are biting in the back waters. A 10lb flounder was caught in the back waters this last weekend, but most of the larger fish have moved offshore. Mud minnows and finger mullet are the best baits for inshore flounder. Speckled trout and redfish are biting well inshore. shrimp is the best bait. Offshore, cobia can be caught on near shore wrecks fishing live bait on the bottom, snapper fishing is fair, and dolphin are biting very well 25 miles - 30 miles out on weed lines. Troll ballyhoo with a bright colored skirt along the weeds until you find the dolphin, then drift that area and use squid on medium spinning rods to work the school. Always leave one fish in the water when you are drift fishing for dolphin, this will keep the rest of the school near your boat. For more information contact;

Panama City Guest Report

Report for 06/22/2007 Salt Water
DESTIN - This is an exciting week here in Destin, Most everyone is getting ready for the Emerald Coast Billfish Classis. Offshore fishing is really hot so the tournament should be great. The weather looks good for the weekend and the fishing is good from the nipple and out. Plenty of dolphin, wahoo and blue marlin, even a few sails and white marlin are showing up. We have a good supple of all the offshore baits, ballyhoo, mullet both split tailed and deboned and both ate wedged headed and we also have Spanish. For the bottom fisherman snapper on butterfly jigs in 60 to 150 ft water and grouper and amberjack in water 160-300 ft. Kings are hot all over the nearshore reefs. The Island Pier have been awsom again this week for kings, bonito, hardtails and bait. The surf is pretty slow with all the seaweed right now but that should clear our in a few weeks. Right now theay are getting a few ladyfish, hardtails and sharks. Back in the bay the reds are good close to the bridges but the trout have moved close to the rivers much like winter with the lack of rain. The bay is so salty they have moved into and around the rivers looking for lower salinity Tim Broom
MEXICO BEACH/PORT ST JOE OFFSHORE - The King Mackerel bite is on and should remain steady for some time barring major weather disturbances. Trolling duster rigs and Drone Spoons (down-rigged) is working. You can catch them off the channel buoys to east beach and around the cape shoals area. Drift fishing near and around wrecks with live hard-tails have produced some super kings in the thirty-pound range. There were several reports of Wahoo caught at 30-50 mile range, trolling panhandlers during the Big Bend tournament. Half Hitch Tackle
ST JOSEPH BAY - Preliminary scallop reports indicate a good harvest this season. The trout bite is in full on. Gator trout are primarily in the head of the bay, but fish are widespread and nearly anywhere will result in some great catches. Redfish numbers are good this week and early morning top water fishing is fantastic. Live shrimp are working well and for artificial, try a Capt Mikes spoon. Fish the flats from Pig Island all the way to pompano point and you should be able to catch nice redfish and trout on top water lures like the Mirrolure top dog juniors. Of course, you can never go wrong with the traditional live LY and/or live shrimp under a Cajun thunder float. The Spanish mackerel bite is still very good and their size has improved as the season progresses. Spanish, four pounds and larger are reported daily. Half Hitch Tackle
Fresh Water - Now the water has warmed the bass have moved out into deep holes and around the mouth of channels. Your best beat is deep diving crank baits. Shell cracker and Bluegill bite is going strong this summer. Bottom fishing in 3-4 ft. with a wiggler is producing good numbers. In the afternoon, try the zoom brush hog in 6 to 8 foot of water. Boat Ramps

I published a couple more maps to boat ramps in the state of Florida this last week. I now have maps to saltwater boat ramps in the Florida Panhandle, the Big Bend area, the North East Atlantic Coast, and the East Central Atlantic Coast. The Panhandle zone includes Gulf Breeze to Port St Joe, including Pensacola/Escambia Bay, Fort Walton/Choctawhatchee Bay, and Panama City. The Big Bend zone is from Apalachicola/St. Vincent Sound to Weeki Wachee and includes Steinhatchee, Cedar Key, Crystal River, and Homosassa. The North East Atlantic zone is Amelia Island to Flagler Beach and includes Jacksonville and St Augustine. The East Central Zone is North of Tomoka State Park to Vero Beach and includes Daytona, Ponce Inlet, Titusville/Indian River Lagoon, and Sebastian Inlet. You will find links to these maps in the side bar on the right side of the page. I hope you find them useful during your next trip to any of the hundreds of great fishing destinations our great state has to offer.

These maps are meant for entertainment purposes only. They are a guide to where there should be boat ramps in the state of Florida and what facilities they should have. No guarantee is made as to there accuracy, and no warranty is expressed or implied. They are not a navigational aid and should not be used for this purpose. Use caution and common sense when using the Latitude and Longitude positions. These readings should be accurate, but I can not guarantee that they are. Many of these ramps are in remote locations. Use caution when using these ramps and always let some one where you will be.

Key Largo Has Dolphin Offshore Trout Inshore

I spoke with Adam at Yellow Bait House on Key Largo this afternoon. Dolphin are holding about 32 miles offshore. Troll ballyhoo around weed lines and floating debris to catch some nice dolphin. Yellow tail snapper are on reefs in 80ft of water. Silver sides are the best bait. Mangrove snapper are holding on structure near shore. Silver sides are also good for the mango's. Inshore, speckled trout fishing is hot! Lots of bait has pushed right up to the mangroves and is sending the trout into a feeding frenzy. Cast net your bait near where you will be fishing for the best results, or buy shrimp. For more information contact;

Charlie from Howard's Bait & Tackle Inc. in Port Orange was telling me this afternoon that his customers are catching dolphin and snapper offshore, and black drum on the beach. Troll ballyhoo for the dolphin around weed lines, floating debris, and color breaks. Snapper will be on drop offs', wrecks, and reefs. Cut sardines and shrimp will be the best baits. Black drum will be around the Sunglow Pier. Pieces of crab and clams are the best bait. For more information contact;

Bradenton Fishing is Good

I spoke with Annamae at Corkey's Live Bait & Tackle in Bradenton this morning. She was telling me that fishing is good with some nice catches of speckled trout and redfish coming from Palma Sola Bay and the Manatee River. Look for the trout on grass flats in 3ft - 6ft of water, around docks at night, or in the drop offs around sand bars. Redfish will hold to mangrove shore lines, oyster bars, and docks. Shrimp are the best bait, along with pinfish and Black Salty's for the trout. Permit are eating small pass crabs around Sister Key, Longboat Key, and in the intercoastal. Tarpon fishing is very good along the beach and especially on the west side of Egmont Key. Big blue crabs are the bait of choice for these tarpon due to the large number of blue crabs and pass crabs being flushed from Tampa Bay on the out going tides. Corkey's caries a large variety of live and frozen baits including large and small pass and blue crabs, pinfish, shrimp, and Black Salty baits. They also carry all kinds of frozen bait, and provide in house rod and reel repair. For more information contact;

North Skyway Pier

I just got off of the phone with the North Skyway Fishing Pier in St Petersburg. One angler there just pulled in a 24' gag grouper using pinfish as bait. Snapper fishing is very good. Shrimp is the best bait for snapper. Spanish mackerel are still biting early in the day and late afternoon. Clark Spoons and Got-Cha Plugs are best for spanish mackerel. For more information contact;

Marathon Snapper Bite Is On

I spoke with Debbie at the Tackle Box in Marathon this morning. She was telling me that snapper are biting very well on the reefs. Yesterday, Debbie caught a 33" mutton snapper in 200' of water while drift fishing with live pinfish. Many more mutton's are also being caught drifting the reefs. Yellowtail and mangrove snapper are on wrecks and reefs in 60 feet of water and will also eat a pinfish or cut bait. Black grouper are on structure in 40' to 60' of water. Pinfish are also the best bait for grouper. Dolphin are scattered and hard to find. The Gulf Stream has moved well offshore taking the majority of the dolphin with it. The tarpon run is winding down although one of the local guides put his charter on a tarpon that took, 3 different anglers, 4 hours and 20 minutes to get to the boat! For more information contact;

Bonita Springs, As Good As It Has Ever Been

I spoke with Ken at Master Bait & Tackle in Bonita Springs this morning. He tells me that"Fishing is as good as it has ever been!". A 62lb cobia was caught about 5 miles offshore yesterday. Look for the cobia along with goliath grouper,BIG permit, and an ocasional kingfish around the artifical reefs, sunken barges, and the sunken crane of the offshore waters. Pinfish, whitebait, greenbacks, threadfins, or whatever type of baitfish is swiming in the area you are fishing will be good baits. Big spanish mackerel are on the reefs and wrecks, near shore, around passes and in the bays. Small silver spoons, Got-Cha Plugs, and smaller bait fish are all good baits. Mangrove snapper are all over the place! Sea walls, rock piles, bridges, docks, piers, and mangrove shorelines are all holding lots of snapper in the 4lb - 5lb range. Live shrimp, pinfish, and smaller baitfish are all good baits. Snook season is closed and all snook caught must be released alive, **Mote Marine, PLEASE TAKE NOTE!**, but there is great catch and release snook fishing on the beach and in area passes. Pinfish, whitebaits, and greenbacks, fished where the waves are breaking on the beach early in the morning, or around structure in and near a pass at night, will catch lots of snook right now. These same night time spots are also great places for a Zara Spook or other top water plug that you can "walk the dog" with. Tarpon have migrated past the south west gulf coast and only a few straglers can be caught. For more information contact;

Sebastian Inlet a Little Slow

I spoke with Steve at Inlet Bait & Tackle near Sebastian Inlet today. He was telling me that fishing is a little slow at the inlet now that the hot weather has settled in. Your best bet from the jetty's is spanish mackerel and jack crevalle. Small silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs will catch most of the spanish mackerel, larger silver spoons or a flashy or popper plug will get the jacks to bite. A fast erratic retrieve works best. Over sized redfish are also being caught from the jetty's. Mullet and pinfish are the best baits. Mangrove snapper are being caught from the rocks. The best action is around the cat walk. Shrimp and clams are the best baits. For more information contact'

Stuart Fishing is Excellent!

I spoke with Henry at Snook Nook Discount Bait & Tackle in Jensen Beach this morning. He tells me that fishing is excellent whether you fish the river, the surf, or offshore. In the Indian River, redfish can be caught before sun rise from Bear Point south, on the east or west side of the river. Shrimp and finger mullet are the best bait. Speckled trout are on the east side of Jensen bridge and on the north side of Roosevelt bridge. Look for them along grass edges in 3ft of water. A shrimp or jerk bait worked slowly will get the trout to bite. Snapper are also around the bridges. Shrimp is the best bait. Tarpon around 60lb to 80lb are around the Crossroads and the Power Plant. Bring different types of bait because they will only eat shrimp one day, finger mullet the next, and DOA Terror Eyz the next. In the surf, a few bluefish and jacks are still being caught but whiting and croaker are biting very well. Shrimp, live or dead, fished on the bottom close to shore will catch whiting and croaker. Lots of big tarpon are on the beach all the way to St Lucie Inlet. Crabs and sardines are the best bait. Offshore, dolphin are plenty full but are not holding to any kind of a pattern.Look for any type of floating debris and troll around it. The bigger dolphin are in 200ft of water. King mackerel are in 30ft of water. Troll what ever type of bait fish is swimming in the area to catch kingfish. Grouper around 15lb's and mutton snapper are in 60ft - 80ft of water. Sardines are the best bait for grouper and mutton snapper. For more information contact;

Charlotte Harbor

I spoke with Jeff at Fishin' Franks Bait & Tackle in Port Charlotte today. He was telling me that tarpon fishing in Boca Grande Pass is of coarse as hot as the weather, but there is also great fishing for those who don't want to catch a fish that is as bib as they are. Many nice cobia are being caught between the bridge to Punta Gorda and the Bay shore Pier. The cobia are feeding best on sugar trout in about 6' of water. The Placida area is holding lots of redfish. A live or dead shrimp on a jig head fisher around mangrove shore line or oyster bars will catch redfish. For more information contact;

Panama City Guest Report

Report for 06/15/2007 Salt Water

PANAMA CITY OFFSHORE AND BAYS: Schools of Tarpon have been spotted cruising the beaches just off the sandbars. Use live mullet, pin fish, pogies, cigar minnows or menhaden on a 7 to 12/0 circle hook with 60 to 100# fluorocarbon leaders and 20 to 30# main line. We are still waiting for some good weedlines to form offshore, but a few Wahoo are being caught as close in as 15 miles. High speed trollers like the Panhandler and Yo Zuri Bonita in back and purple colors are working best. Mahi Mahi are also making their appearance known. Lots of chicken dolphin are being caught around many of the offshore wrecks. King Mackerel fishing has really come on strong with the warmer temperatures we are experiencing. Smaller kings are still being caught trolling Dusters and free-lining live or dead bait. Larger Kings are being caught slow trolling live bait at a depth of 30-40 feet. Use downriggers or heavy egg sinkers with long leaders to attain the depth range needed. The Grouper bite is still steady in the 100 to 200 foot areas on mainly hard bottom. Live bait, whole boston mackerel and jigs are working well. Jigs with a glow color to them are a sure bet. Amberjack are on many of the inshore wrecks and reefs in good numbers. Try the Bridge Spans for lots of action. The larger fish will be well offshore over hard bottom. Live cigar minnows or pinfish will entice the larger fish, while jigs (Williamson Jig) will trigger the most bites. Snapper action is still going strong. A killer technique is to use live shrimp on light wire 3/0 or 4/0 circle hooks with 30# fluorocarbon leader. Live shrimp will catch good numbers of snapper, especially when the bite is hard to come by. Squid, cigar minnows and chunks of northern mackerel are working well also. The bag limit for state waters remains four snapper per person and 16” length, however in federal waters only two snapper per person and 16” length. Federal waters start basically nine miles from land, and is noted on your maps as the Natural resources boundary. Ladyfish, Bluefish and Bar Jacks are everywhere up and down the beaches right now. Throw Pompano Jigs, Gotcha’s and Spoons on light tackle for a lot of fun. Half Hitch Tackle

ST ANDREWS BAY SYSTEM: The Trout bite is picking up some. They are on the flats and roaming the grassy areas. Big trout can be caught early in the day on topwater plugs. An excellent technique is to rig a Berkley Gulp 4” Shrimp weedless with a standard wide gap worm hook. The bait will sink slow and with each twitch will dart erratically. The trout will nail it on the fall! The redfish action is still going strong. Gulp, Gold Spoons and Soft Jerk Baits are working well. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, try throwing topwater baits (Top Dog Jr in Bone) for some explosive action. Half Hitch Tackle

DAN RUSSEL PIER: Spanish mackerel and a few Kings are being caught every day at the pier right now. Pompano, Whiting, Blue Fish, and Lay Fish are also being caught. Call 850-233-5080 for the latest pier fishing information.

DESTIN: We have had a great week of king mackerel fishing. The pier has been getting them good in the early morning hours and in the afternoon. Drift fishing with cigar minnows is best. The boats have been getting them trolling the broken bottom and pole spot. The blue water fishing is also excellent with plenty of dolphin and wahoo around the nipple and elbow. Several marlin were caught this week and the Mother Load had 3 nice swordfish mid week, one was close to 80lbs. The snapper and grouper have been ok if you fish with light leaders and small hooks. In the bay the reds have been very good all over the bridges but the trout have been very slow. I guess the fact we have had very little rain and the bay is so salty the trout have pushed back into the rivers. In the surf there is a good supple of ladyfish and hardtails during the mornings and late afternoon along with plenty of sharks after dusk. Tim Broom

MEXICO BEACH/PORT ST JOE OFFSHORE: NOAA reports expect seas to be calm around 1-3 feet throughout the week. The Snapper/ Grouper bite is steady; the pattern should remain constant throughout this week. Reports have the best numbers in or about one hundred fifty feet of water. Live bait is plentiful and will continue to be easy to catch over wrecks and reefs close in. Mahi-Mahi, although small are showing up close inshore this season with several caught trolling close to the air force tower. To be the first with a big bull dolphin go further offshore and look for a weed line or flotsam. Troll small Boone jet baits or ballyhoo until you find a school and remember to keep a Mahi in the water at all times to attract the others to the boat, and then toss any variety of jigs and lures. The King Mackerel bite is full on this week with good numbers caught near shore and on off shore structures. Look for bait schools around the bottom structure and along the buoy line. Your best bet is trolling dusters and flat lining over structure where bait is holding.

ST JOSEPH BAY: Afternoon thunderstorms can pop-up at any time so watch out for them and be safe. You can expect calm to moderate chop in bay waters and lots of sunshine throughout the week. The Trout bite is on and Redfish too, many great catches this past week and barring significant weather changes this pattern may well continue. Live shrimp are working well and those of you who prefer artificial baits try the Capt. Mike’s spoon. The flats from Pig Island to Pompano point are all productive so go to it. The Flounder are still biting strong, but definitely slowing. Your best spots for flounder remain the George C. Tapper Bridge, and the PSJ marina. Bull minnows Carolina rigged with a size 1 circle hook using fluorocarbon leader material and a 1 oz or smaller egg weight remains the bait of choice.

FRESHWATER: Shell cracker and Bluegill bite is hot and if you have a fly rod it is more fun than you can imagine. If you are not a fly angler then fish the bottom in three to four feet of water with wigglers. For Bass you cannot go wrong with a Bang-o-lure. Bass are hitting in both sandy bottoms and mouths of tributaries, typically about two feet from shore so be ready to set your hook. Bass are also hitting soft baits like the Zoom brush hogs and 6’ to 10” ribbon tail worms. Pitch these baits around structure and cross their eyes when they strike.

Pensacola Fishing is Excelent!

I just got off the phone with Victor at Gulf Breeze Bait & Tackle in Gulf Breeze. He was telling me that fishing is excellent inshore, on the beach, in the pass, and offshore. Speckled trout are all over the grass flats. Shrimp, jigs, and slug baits will catch the most trout. Redfish and flounder are in the pass, and around docks and other structure inshore. Shrimp and mud minnows are the best baits. Spanish mackerel and king mackerel are thick on the Beach Pier and in the pass. Small Clark Spoons or Got-Cha Plugs will catch the spanish, blue runners, cigar minnows, and hardtails all work well on kingfish. Pompano and whiting are biting well in the surf but floating grass is making fishing for them dificult. Sand flees, shrimp, and pompano jigs are the baits of choice. Red snapper and triggerfish are thick on structure 10 miles to 25 miles into the Gulf. Cigar minnows and sardines are the best baits. Amberjack, dolphin, wahoo, and blue marlin can be caught 30 miles offshore and out. Troll for them around the Nipple, the 131, the Elbow, and deep water rigs. For more information contact;

Every Thing is Biting in Naples

I spoke with Phil at Captain Pete's Bait & Tackle in Naples today. He was telling me that every thing is biting right now. The local party boats are fishing about 15 miles offshore and are catching grouper, snapper, and sharks. Inshore, Phil's customers are catching snook, trout, redfish, and spanish mackerel. Snook season is closed, so any snook caught must be released, but you can catch them on the beaches and in area passes from late afternoon until early in the morning. Pinfish and whitebait are the best baits. Speckled trout will be on grass flats in the day and around lighted docks at night. Live shrimp, jigs, and slug baits will catch trout day or night and suspending twitch baits work well at night. Redfish will be around mangrove shorelines, docks, and oyster bars. Live shrimp, gold spoons, and cut mullet or ladyfish are all good baits for redfish. Spanish mackerel will be in passes, on the beach, and a few will be on the grass flats. Silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs are the best baits. Tarpon are every where. Pass crabs, small blue crabs and greenbacks are the best baits for tarpon. For more information contact

Jupiter Inlet

I just got off of the phone with Tommy at Jupiter Bait & Tackle in Jupiter. He was telling me that his customers are catching lots of dolphin by trolling live ballyhoo around weed lines and floating debris in 175ft of water. Most of these dolphin are schoolies, but Tommy tels me that they are the larger schoolies. There are also a lot of large bull dolphin being caught. Snapper fishing is excellent. Good numbers of snapper are being caught just outside of Jupiter Inlet using live shrimp and squid. For more information contact;

Dunedin

I spoke with Pat at Dunedin Fishing Center in Dunedin this afternoon. He was telling me that fishing has slowed quit a bit. Lots of undersized trout can still be caught, but the larger speckled trout are hard to find. A live shrimp under a popping cork will catch most trout. Redfish are the same story as the trout. There are still plenty of smaller "rat" reds to be caught, but the larger fish have moved out of the area. Shrimp or gold spoons fished around oyster bars or mangrove shore line will catch redfish. Spanish mackerel are still biting well. Most of the spanish are being caught in Hurricane Pass on strong in-coming or out-going tides. Clark Spoons and Got-Cha Plugs are the best baits for spanish mackerel. Catch and release snook fishing is excellent on the beach and in the passes. Large pinfish and white bait are excellent baits for snook on the beach. Remember that snook season is closed, so all snook caught must be released. Tarpon fishing is also excellent. Look for rolling tarpon near the beach and outside of local inlets. For more information contact;

Jacksonville

I spoke with J.B. at B&M Bait & Tackle in Jacksonville this morning. He was telling me that flounder are biting very well in the creeks and in the river. Mud minnows and finger mullet are the best baits for flounder. Slowly bouncing your bait across a sandy or muddy bottom that has good water flow will entice flounder to bite. Many good sized cobia are holding on structure about 9 miles offshore. A 40lb and a 65lb cobia were caught in the last few days. Artificial's are working best on cobia, but pogies are also a good bait. Dolphin fishing is excellent but the fish are holding well offshore of Jacksonville. Troll ballyhoo and skirted baits around weed lines and floating debris to catch dolphin. For more information contact;

Sarasota

I spoke with Sut at New Pass Grill & Bait Shop in Sarasota this morning. He was telling me that fishing is good both inshore and offshore. There are lots of tarpon in the area with the majority of the fish on the beaches. The best way to target tarpon is to anchor in an area where you have spotted fish before and put out a spread of baits with a fresh dead greenback on the bottom and either a crab or a live greenback under a float. You can also "Leap Frog " the fish. Cruise the beach until you spot rolling tarpon and watch to see what direction they are traveling. Then motor to a spot well ahead of the school, cut your motor and wait for the school comes to you. Again, put a bait on the bottom and one on top. After the fish have swam well past you, start your motor and make a wide arc around the fish until you are well in front of them again. Amberjack to 28lb are on offshore reefs and wrecks. A small bluerunner has been the best bait. Yellowtail snapper are also on offshore wrecks in deeper water. Large jigs and big shrimp have been the best bait for the snapper. A few good sized kingfish are still on local reefs. Sut caught a 12lb kingfish and a 28lb kingfish this last week. Snook are biting well in the passes and on the beach. Snook season is closed so all snook caught must e released. Redfish are biting well around docks, oyster bars and mangrove shoreline. Live shrimp or cut mullet and ladyfish are good baits for redfish. For more information contact;

Ponce Inlet Has Lots of Kings!

I spoke with Al at Rip Tide Bait & Tackle at Ponce Inlet this morning. He was telling that the fishing is good in and around Ponce Inlet. King mackerel are every where, but the largest concentrations are just outside of the inlet. Trolling live bait or anchoring and chumming will result in multiple hook ups. Bluefish, between 4lb - 5lb, are active early in the morning in and around the inlet. Silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs are good baits for bluefish. Keeper mangrove snapper are being caught early in the morning from the pier at Rip Tide bait & Tackle. Live shrimp are the best bait. Pompano are being caught in Ponce Inlet and on the beach. Sand flees and pompano jigs are the best baits. Cobia are being caught around structure near the beach. Grouper and snapper are on offshore reefs and wrecks. Local captains are reporting 10 - 15 shorts for every one keeper grouper or snapper being caught, but the keepers are all nice sized fish. Pinfish are the best bait for grouper, snapper, and cobia. Panhandle Fishing Piers

I spoke with Jerry at Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier near Pensicola this afternoon. He was telling me that kingfish are providing most of the action from the pier right now. Cigar minnows and hardtails are the bait of choice for the king mackerel. There are also plenty of spanish mackerel around, but they are off and on and are finicky when they are biting. A #0 or #00 Clark Spoon, or a Got-Cha Plug tied to 30lb fluorocarbon should produce spanish mackerel when they are biting. Just remember to re-tie your lure after each strike. This will prevent you from loosing your lure due to frayed line. A few pompano are being taken from the pier. They are biting best early in the day on sand flees, live shrimp, and pompano jigs. A school of tarpon rolled past the pier earlier today but were scared off by an over zealous angler who drooped an egg sinker in the middle of the school. Remember that bait fish, and pieces of led, do not jump into the path of hungry predators. If you see a school of tarpon or any other predatory fish and you can not put your bait well in front of them, wait until they pass and then put your bait in the area they were swimming. They will probably loop back around and when they do, you will be ready. For more information contact;

Homosassa Cobia Tournament

I spoke with Tim at MacRae's Bait House in Homosassa this morning. He was busy preparing for the 23rd Annual Cobia "BIG" Fish Tournament out of MacRae's Bait House in Homosassa and Twin Rivers Marina in Crystal River this weekend. This two day event features $13,000 in cash and prizes, with $6,000 going to the angler with the largest cobia. The 200 boat field can win top honors in any of three categories, cobia, grouper, and spotted trout, and every angler weighing a fish is registered to win a door prize. Other activities include a barbecue on Saturday, a fish fry on Sunday, and live entertainment all weekend. The event is hosted by The Homosassa Game Fish Club and all weigh ins will be held at MacRae's. Tim tells me that the water is beautiful and fishing has been excellent this week. A 32lb cobia was brought to the docks yesterday and grouper, trout, bluefish, redfish, and spanish mackerel are all biting well. For more information contact;

Panama City Guest Report

Salt Water
PANAMA CITY OFFSHORE AND BAYS A few Wahoo have shown up within the past week and are being caught as close in as 15 miles. High speed trollers like the Panhandler and Yo Zuri Bonita in black and purple colors are working best. Mahi Mahi are also making their appearance known. Not very many are being caught, but if you can find some weed patches or floating debri, there is a good chance that a few fish will be on them. King Mackerel fishing has been sporadic lately.

ST ANDREWS BAY SYSTEM The Trout bite is picking up some. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, try throwing topwater baits (Top Dog Jr in Red Head/White Body) for some explosive action. Half Hitch Tackle

DAN RUSSEL PIER Spanish mackerel and a few Kings are being caught every day at the pier right now. Pompano, Whiting, Blue Fish, and Laidy Fish are also being caught. Call 850-233-5080 for the latest pier fishing information.

DESTIN Near shore kings and reds under the bridge were the catch of the week. There were people who managed to get some nice catches of grouper and snapper. We did hear of some great wahoo and dolphin action 30-50 miles offshore. It was a excellent week on the pier with lots of kings in the early morning hours and plenty of blues, hardtails and ladyfish in the afternoon. For you bay guys trout were slow. Tim Broom

MEXICO BEACH/PORT ST JOE OFFSHORE Reports we received this week indicated that good numbers of snapper and grouper caught between twenty-five and forty miles out. Live bait is abundant around the buoys and over wrecks and reefs. The King Mackerel are here. Trolling dusters rigged with cigar minnows is good way to locate and catch kings. The Spanish Mackerel are fattening up, three-plus pound fish, and larger catches are common along the buoy line. Trolling with a mackerel tree and Clark spoon is working great...

ST JOSEPH BAY Redfish are showing up in good numbers on the flats. Live LY’s is the bait of choice and live shrimp is a close second although the Pinfish (Choffers) readily devour them. Either fish these live baits under a Cajun thunder float or Carolina rig them with just enough weight to keep them on the bottom. Artificial baits include the “Gotcha” grub and you can improve your hook-ups by tipping them with Fish-bites or Berkley Gulp. Good spots to fish are the flats around Black’s island and along the channel near Pig’s Bayou. For flounder in these same areas, use Bull minnows Carolina rigged with a size 1 circle hook using a fluorocarbon leader and a 1 oz or less egg weight. Pompano fishing is stellar and the hot spots are the stump hole at Cape San Blas and along the beaches of St Joseph State Park. Most of the fish were caught using sand fleas, both natural and artificial on double hook pompano rigs.

Fresh Water
FRESHWATER Bluegill and Shellcracker fishing is still going strong. Use Red wigglers and/or Beetle Spins to fill your stringer. The bass spawn is largely over, hungry bass are actively feeding, and the bigger bass are holding in deeper cooler water near structure. Early morning and just before dark are great times to break out the topwater plugs for some gill rattling action. Smaller bass are hitting throughout the day and close to shore. Work an area thoroughly before moving on and pay close attention to logs and other structure.

North Skyway Fishing Pier

I was talking with the North Skyway Fishing Pier in the mouth of Tampa Bay this afternoon. They were telling me that bite was a little slow this afternoon, but with the tide about to change and the cooler evening temperatures setting in, the fish should begin to feed better. Spanish mackerel are still around and feeding well early morning and late afternoon. Got-Cha Plugs and Clark Spoons work well for spanish mackerel. Mango snapper of 16" and better are feeding at night. Greenbacks and shrimp are the best baits. Pier anglers are still catching a good number of grouper. Most are shorts, but there are some keepers being taken each day. Greenbacks are the best bait for grouper. For more information contact;

Titusville/ Mosquito Lagoon

I spoke with Tom at Doc's Bait & Tackle in Titusville this afternoon. He was telling me that he has not gotten any offshore reports since the winds finally stoped blowing a few days ago. Winds are forecast to be light, and seas calm for the next few days, so offshore fishing should be picking up. He was also telling me that surf fishing is poor due to dirty water. Inshore fishing is good. Speckled trout are every where in 3ft - 4ft of water. The best action is on top water lures early in the morning or on pig fish. Snook season is closed in all of Florida, but there is great catch and release snook action early in the day, and at night, around rocks and at Haullover Canal. The large schools of redfish, (100+ fish), are in the Mosquito Lagoon. They can be caught on live shrimp, mullet, or Berkly Gulp Jerk Shad. For more information contact;

St.Augustine Fishing is Improving

I spoke with Candice at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St Augustine this morning. She tells me that fishing has improved since the wind finally stoped blowing four days ago. Surf anglers are catching bluefish, black drum, pompano, and whiting.The blue fish will eat cut mullet fished on the bottom or Got-Cha Plugs. The black drum, pompano, and whiting are being caught on dead shrimp or clams fished on the bottom. Redfish are being caught in and around creeks on mud minnows and live shrimp. Flounder are around docks and are hitting mud minnows. Speckled trout can be caught around dock lights, at night, using shrimp and mud minnows. Sheepshead are around bridges and will hit dead shrimp and clams. For more information contact;

Fort Lauderdale

I spoke with Tom at Kingsbury & Sons Tackle in Fort Lauderdale this afternoon. He was telling me that as soon as the wind layed down a couple of days ago, the offshore action picked up. The ladies fishing tournament this last weekend produced several good sized dolphin and yesterday one of his customers landed 16 dolphin from 5lb-8lb's. The dolphin are hitting lures trolled around weed lines 4-6 miles offshore. A 47lb wahoo was also taken yesterday by a boat trolling the weed lines. Blackfin tuna are being caught kite fishing around the same areas along with a blue marlin per day in the 200lb range. Ballyhoo are taking the tuna, marlin, and wahoo. Closer to shore, snook are biting very well on the beach, in the inlets, and around bridges. Snook season is closed in all of Florida, so all snook caught must be released. Tom was telling me that there is almost no bait fish around Fort Lauderdale and Miami right now. Pinfish, Redtail Hawks, and Zara Spooks are all good baits to use for snook until the schools of bait fish return. For more information contact;

Sebastian Inlet

Whitey's Bait & Tackle reports that spanish mackerel, pompano and permit are being caught off of the North Jetty of Sebastian Inlet. Got-Cha Plugs and small silver spoons will catch the mackerel, sand flees, shrimp, and pompano jigs will work on pompano, pieces of crab are the best bait for permit. Mangrove snapper and redfish are being caught from the rocks along the north shore of the inlet. Small pinfish and majorras are the best bait, shrimp will also work. Speckled trout are in the river. Live shrimp is the best bait. Dolphin and wahoo are in 120 ft of water offshore. Trolling ballyhoo around weed lines will catch dolphin. For more information contact;
