St Augustine Fishing is Better Then Average

I spoke with Dave at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St Augustine this afternoon. He was telling me that fishing around St Augustine is better then average for this time of year. At the St Johns Co. Ocean Pier, black drum fishing is exceptional! "More 'puppy' black drum are being caught then any year I can remember." Dave told me. Shrimp, clams, and pieces of crab, fished on the bottom, are the best baits for the black drum. From the pier and in the surf, whiting fishing is fair and pompano are picking up. Shrimp and sand flees are the best bait. Good numbers of flounder are biting in the back waters. A 10lb flounder was caught in the back waters this last weekend, but most of the larger fish have moved offshore. Mud minnows and finger mullet are the best baits for inshore flounder. Speckled trout and redfish are biting well inshore. shrimp is the best bait. Offshore, cobia can be caught on near shore wrecks fishing live bait on the bottom, snapper fishing is fair, and dolphin are biting very well 25 miles - 30 miles out on weed lines. Troll ballyhoo with a bright colored skirt along the weeds until you find the dolphin, then drift that area and use squid on medium spinning rods to work the school. Always leave one fish in the water when you are drift fishing for dolphin, this will keep the rest of the school near your boat. For more information contact;
