Sunset Tarpon On The Skyway Bridge

As the sun set Saturday evening at the Sky Way Bridge, the anglers fishing aboard CJ Flats Saltwater Charters were treated to a spectacular display of lightening off to the East in addition to jumping one very nice Tarpon. Anchoring up current and free-lining a variety of bait produced the strike, but we didn't neglect the rest of the water column. Tarpon with their scooped lower jaw are often just as inclined to take offerings at or near the bottom around the Skyway and more than one decent sized grouper has met its maker in the same manner.

As the weather broke apart and it became apparent we would be treated to a relatively clear night, we switched out tackle and re-rigged for some after-dark Snook fishing along lighted docks. Live bait was plentiful and near Tierra Verde, we tied into several nice Snook and a surprising by-catch. Using a bit heavier Mission Fishing jig head tipped with Gulp! Shrimp, we worked the base of the pilings slowly and pulled out a half dozen or so keeper-sized Mangrove Snapper.
