Trolling Tampa's Near Shore Grouper

Capt Jay Schroeder of CJ Flats Saltwater Charters reports cooler temperatures and consistent Northeast winds dropped water temperatures considerably across the Suncoast Region. Water temperatures ranged between 66 degrees and 68 degrees depending on location and were at least a good 4 degrees cooler than a week ago.

This change in weather was good news nearshore for anglers fishing with Capt Jay Schroeder aboard the Ms. Guided trolling for Grouper. Capt Jay picked up a couple keeper Grouper here and there in addition to some nice sized and good eating Sea Bass. The lures of choice were the Mann’s 25 or the Magnum Stretch 30 depending on the depth Capt Jay was trolling. Target any one of Tampa’s near shore pieces of hard bottom and/or artificial reefs. The key is to cover a lot of ground and when you hit that big one, double back and work the area thoroughly.

Capt Jay warned watch out while you are out there… In addition to Black Grouper, King Mackerel are still prowling local waters and you don’t have to go far to get them. These toothy eating machines were silently waiting and took more than one deep diving lure this week. King Mackerel easily cut through a fluorocarbon leader. Capt Jay recommends using a light wire leader and checking it often for a couple more weeks.

Inshore, Capt Jay reported as temperatures cooled off the Sea Trout bite picked up near Ft. DeSoto. Several Trout were caught over 20 inches on big top water plugs later in the afternoon. “Walking the Dog” with a bone and silver colored Zara Spook was a sure fired way to provoke big old Gators into striking. Just consider knocking the barbs down as these fish are out of season in the Southern Region effective 1 November.
