I spoke with KC at Kingsbury & Sons Tackle in Ft Lauderdale this morning. He was telling me that tarpon are thick in the inlets. A blue crab, pass crab, or fresh dead sardine fished on the bottom is a good way to jump a few tarpon. Snook are in the inlets and on the beach. Pinfish and finger mullet are the best live baits, redtail hawks and top water plugs such as the Zara Spook are the best artificials. Offshore, dolphin are scattered. Look for them around weedlines, floating debris, and color breaks. Sailfish are farther south near Miami in 60ft - 200ft of water. Troll live bait or ballyhoo to find the sails. Wahoo are scattered off of Palm Beach in 150ft - 400ft of water. Trolling an ILand Lure with a ballyhoo is the best way to locate the wahoo. The best fishing is for mangrove and yellowtail snapper on the reefs. Fishing at night is more productive and more comfortable. Use a lot of chum to get the bite going, then drop shrimp, squid, or silversides into the slick. For more information contact;

Night Time Snapper Are Insane Off Of Marathon
I spoke with Jason at the Tackle Box on Marathon this morning. He was telling me that a few bonefish and a few big permit have been caught on local flats. This is unusual this time of year because of high water temperatures. Most permit are on wrecks in 150 ft of water and will eat crabs. Some big dolphin are being caught around weed lines and floating debris 13 miles - 18 miles out. Troll Triple-D Lures and ballyhoo around the weeds to catch dolphin. Swordfish are being caught in1100ft - 1500ft of water during the day. A foot long squid is the bait of choice for swordfish. A blue marlin and a world record spearfish were caught outside the reef this last week. The spearfish should break the old world record by 20lb's. Fishing for blackfin tuna on the 'Hump' is still good. Watch for birds attacking bait fish that are pushed to the surface by the tuna to locate them, then drop a pink butterfly jig down to the tuna. The best fishing in the Keys this time of year is at night on the reefs. Snapper are spawning now through the full moon later this month, and when the moon comes up at night, the action on the reefs is insane! Mangrove snapper and mutton snapper are on the 90ft reefs and will eat pinfish and cut bait. Yellowtail snapper are on wrecks in 150ft and prefer shrimp. For more information contact;

Lightning Strike Injures Baggage Handler In Tampa
7/31/07 - Tampa International Airport
A baggage handler for US Airways was struck by lightning while bringing an airplane to the gate on Tuesday afternoon. The bolt apparently struck the ground before a residual bolt struck the agent, lessening the blow, but sending him to the hospital. As of late Wednesday, he is still in the hospital with an irregular heart beat. This is after two incidences 11 days before where in one a man was struck while trying to get into his car in Brandon, and in another a boy and his mother were struck while on the beach in Treasure Island. The boy died from his injuries several days later. That's 4 people in 11 day within 25 miles of each other. I bring all of this up to remind every one about the dangers of lightning. If you are reading this post you are probably someone who enjoys fishing or other outdoor activities. If you spend enough time in the outdoors, there will be a time when you are caught in the open during a lightning storm. I have found a great web page on the National Weather Service web site called 'Lightning Risk Reduction Outdoors... When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!', www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/outdoors.htm. This is the best, most complete, source of information on lightning safety I have found. It should be required reading for all sport team coaches and outdoor enthusiasts. I will give you the basics here, but please read the entire article.
A fully enclosed building is the safest place. Dugouts, sheds, and picnic shelters are NOT safe!!
A car, truck, or van with a hard top is the next safest place. A soft top vehicle is NOT safe!!
If you are outside, get inside a safe building or vehicle and stay there until 30 minutes after you last hear thunder.
If you are on a boat and it has a cabin, get inside the cabin and stay away from metal and electronics.

Ponce Inlet Fishing Is As Hot As The Weather!
I spoke with Don at Fishin Cove Bait & Tackle in New Smyrna today. He was telling me that fishing is great inshore and offshore, with a large variety of fish being caught.
Inshore - Look for redfish in the inlet, especially on an out going tide. Live shrimp and finger mullet are the best baits along with clams. Flounder are in the intercoastal on sand and shell bottom. Bounce a shrimp, mud minnow, or clam across the bottom to find flounder. Lots of speckled trout re being caught on grass flats and drop offs in the intercoastal. Finger mullet and shrimp are the best baits. Tarpon are heavy in the river. Pinfish, mullet, and crabs will jump many tarpon. Snook are biting in the inlet and on the beach. Pinfish and mullet are good baits. Snook season is closed so bend down the barbs on your hooks, land the fish as quickly as is possible, and spend extra time reviving your snook before releasing it.
Offshore - King mackerel are thick near shore. Slow troll live bait, frozen ballyhoo, or large spoons for kings. Dolphin fishing is good around weed lines and floating debris inside of the Gulf Stream. Troll the weeds with live bait, ballyhoo, and skirted lures until you locate the dolphin, then drift and cast live bait or cut bait on medium action spinning gear. Sailfish and wahoo are in the same areas as the dolphin. Troll your baits deeper in the water column to catch sails and wahoo. Snapper fishing is excellent and grouper are biting well on near shore wrecks and drop offs. Pinfish, and sardines fished on the bottom will produce lots of grouper, red snapper and mangrove snapper. Yellowtail snapper are on wrecks in the Gulf Stream. Shrimp are the best bait for yellowtails. For more information contact;
