Mackerel and Cobia are in Pensicola

I spoke with Gulf Breeze Bait & Tackle and Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier this afternoon to see see how the fishing is around Pensacola. Inshore, the fishing is very good with lots of redfish and speckled trout being caught. Live shrimp is the best bait for reds and trout. At the pier and in the gulf, cobia are a more consistent catch now, spanish mackerel and king mackerel have moved into the area, and pompano are biting well. Three cobia were taken at the pier all ready today using cobia jigs. Live mullet and cigar minnows are the baits of choice for spanish mackerel and king mackerel. Medium sized tackle, a 6ft - 7ft rod and a reel loaded with 200yds of 8lb - 12lb test line, will work fine for spanish mackerel and pompano, but if you are after king mackerel or cobia plan on using much heavier gear.
