Redfish Rule Changes Being Considered

This is a follow up to Captain Vic's post yesterday on the proposed rule changes being considered for redfish by the FWC. I found this information in a report the FWRI presented to the FWC in there June meeting. The report gives a rundown on the possible rule change options and there estimated results. These are just options that are being presented for consideration. Nothing has been decided and from the little bit of information I was able to dig up, nothing will be decided before December or January. If you see options here that you can agree with, and others that you can't, lets let them know. I will try to find out if there going to be any more Red Drum Work Group Meetings this year and let you know.

Recommendations

Raise management goal from 30% escapement to 40%.

Closed season in October

21" - 27" slot limit, 1 fish bag limit

'Trophy Tag' option for larger fish.

Slot Management Options & Estimated Results

With no change to current regulations, (18"-27" slot, 1 fish bag limit, no closed season), the escapement estimate is 36% in the Atlantic, and 32% in the Gulf in three years.

If the rules are amended to include a 21"-27" slot, 1 fish bag limit, the following options will result in these estimated escapement percentages in three years.

No Closed Season - 40% Atlantic, 30% Gulf
Closed March or April - 41% Atlantic, 38% Gulf
Closed September or October 45% Atlantic, 40% Gulf
2 Fish Bag Limit
No Closed Season 35% Atlantic, 32% Gulf
