Canals Are Hot Spots In Cool Water

Captain Jay Schroeder of CJ Flats Saltwater Charters reports with cooler than usual temperatures throughout the month of November, fishing the flats the last few weeks in Tampa Bay has slowed down. All of Captain Jay’s favorite haunts during the summer and late fall are near void of life. Bait was scarce; however there were some very nice Trout near the deeper ledges off the grass flats of Anclote Key. Working these fish slowly early with a variety of plastics and jigs proved best.

On warmer afternoons with higher tides, Redfish could still be found roaming in small groups near Ft. DeSoto and Anna Maria. But for anglers wanting to catch fish consistently - new tactics were in order and Tampa’s inshore residential canals proved to be the Hot Spot in cooler weather. While searching for Redfish in one canal near Tierra Verde, anglers fishing with Captain Jay caught some very nice Flounder. Although not the target species, Lady Fish, Jack Crevalle, and Trout were also thick in the mix in these deeper waters. All Captain Jay’s fish were caught on the first couple hours of the incoming tide.

Cooler temperature and light winds heading into the weekend also allowed from some amazing nearshore action. Capt Jay successfully tackled some very nice Red Grouper and Black Grouper off rock piles along the Gulf Coast. Slow trolling Magnum Stretch Plugs proved an effective method to work pieces of limestone bottom. When a good strike was had, Capt Jay anchored up or slow drifted and worked cut bait off the bottom. In addition to some nice keeper Grouper, Black Sea Bass, Grunts, and Mangrove Snapper were also taken off the bottom.
