It is time to get out of the house and go fishing.  We enjoyed some of the best weather we have seen in a long time in February and hopefully that will remain the same through March.  With the warmer weather spring has surely sprung.  The waters are turning on with fish so get out and go catch some.

March is definitely time to go running the beach looking for Manta Rays and free swimming Cobia.  There has already been a lot of Cobia caught along the reefs and bait pods scattered outside the Inlet and along the beaches.  If the weather holds, it could be one of the best Cobia runs we have had in a long time.  Keep a watchful eye out around the boat and have a buck tail or live bait rigged and ready to pitch a surface wake or a dark shallow boat side.  If you are too slow to present a bait/lure, the opportunity will be gone in a flash.  There goes your chance at Cobia for dinner.  Whitey’s is having its Annual Cobia tournament so stop in before you go and sign-up.
   
Dolphin should also start making there way back through in good numbers soon.  It will be nice to put some color back in the box when they show.  Also expect Kingfish and other migrants in tow.

In case you haven’t heard of the new ruling for Sea Bass from the oh so wise National Fishery scientists you might want to sit down before continuing to read……….O.K. are you sitting, ready?  They have closed Sea Bass for recreational and commercial fishing.  That’s like putting a ban on the harvest of Cockroaches.  These people need to be stopped.  With this latest ruling any credibility that they had left is gone.  If anything Sea Bass numbers are on the rise.  You can’t put a piece of squid on bottom without catching a pesky Sea Bass.  This is more proof that their data collection is flawed and the population estimates are way off.  Somebody please help them come to their senses before they shut down everything.  What’s next a 30-year ban on Hardhead Catfish?

Sebastian Inlet has had some great fishing recently.  Tons of Bluefish have been reported on out-going tides.  Large spoons have been the lure of choice, cast into the inlet and retrieved just off bottom.  Black drum and Pompano are being caught on both Jetties using Clams and Sand Fleas.  The Flounder are making their way back into the river and have been a fairly consistent catch off the south jetty.  Live Mud Minnows or Finger Mullet have accounted for most of the Flounder.

I am pretty sure you heard or smelt the bad fish kill that occurred at Sebastian Inlet a few weeks back.  The rumor mill was churning with that one.  I heard rumors of toxic waste out of the Sebastian River and C-54 canal to oil disbursements from the Deep Water Horizon spill in the Gulf.  To set the record straight the reason why they all died was simple lack of oxygen.  A large school of Pogies came into the Inlet filled up the channel with fish and simply sucked all of the oxygen out of the water.  It is hard to believe that that could happen, but according to the FWC research people that responded that is what happened.  If any of you have ever tried to keep Pogies alive in a bait well before you can attest they are hard to keep alive.  You put more than a dozen in there and they all go belly-up.  Hey, don’t let NOAA know that might close down the whole east coast due to too many fish in one area.

The Lagoon has been producing good numbers of trout and redfish on the flats.  Warmer weather brings the fish back to the shallow water areas of the lagoon.  Live shrimp, small baitfish or your favorite top water plug can bring some exciting fishing.  Fire up that boat or put on the waders and go have some fun.

Surf fishing has been the best it has been for years recently.  Good numbers of Pompano are being caught mostly around the Inlet.  Clams have been the number one bait, mainly due to lack of Sand fleas.  Whiting and the occasional Black Drum are also being reported as a tasty by-catch.

Coastal Angler Magazine Orlando, Fishing Florida Radio and our event sponsors proudly present the second annual, Central Florida Shad and Crappie Derby to be held during the months of January and February 2011 in the Greater Orlando area.  The two month long catch photo and release (CPR) derby is free to all anglers who register at any of our derby sponsor locations.  Anglers are permitted to fish anywhere they choose in Florida, and as much as they want during the derby timeframe. All participants must log into and upload their photos to www.cfshadderby.com.  All photos must be taken using the official derby measuring device and include the official derby sponsor token.
American shad are an anadromous species that return to the St. Johns River every spring to spawn, and their run is the closest we Floridians will ever see to the salmon runs experienced in the northeastern and northwestern coasts of North America.  Crappies on the other hand are year round residents of Central Florida that inhabit all freshwater lakes and waterways.  Black crappie are abundant during the colder months of the year and they are fun to catch using the same tackle, baits and techniques as shad.

Derby Rules:
Derby starts at sunrise on Sunday January 1st, and ends at sunset February 28th.
There are no entry fees; anglers must register at one of the eleven official derby sponsor locations and pick-up the official Derby Rules, Measuring Ruler and Token.
Anglers must meet all of the fishing regulations requirements of the State of Florida and possess both freshwater and saltwater license as they apply.
This is a catch, photograph and release (CPR) tournament only.
Anglers are permitted to fish anywhere in Florida.
Angles must take fish with hook and line only.
Anglers are permitted to fish in any manner desired, paddle fishing, boat, shoreline or wade.
Anglers can fish as many times as they want within the derby timeframe.
Five categories will be presented, fly division, conventional division, youth division 15-years old and under, Ladies division, and Pro Angler division.
Fish must be measured using the official measuring device, other commercial or homemade measuring devices are forbidden. Official measurement will be total length from the nose to the tip of the tail for crappie, and from nose to fork of the tail on shad, and the longest fish wins.
Anglers are responsible for uploading photos to the official derby judging internet site. Photos must include the official derby token, no exceptions.
Derby judges final decision stands.

Hook Kids on Fishing Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed to assist with the Hook Kids on Fishing event to be held in conjunction with the Mosquito Creek Outdoors Family Outdoor Day and the Apopka Foliage Festival held on April 24th and 25th in Apopka. The HKOF event will be on Saturday, April 24th, from 10 am to noon and is free to all kids. After completing the five learning stations, each child will receive a free rod, reel and tackle box. We are anticipating over 100 kids and their parents to attend, so you assistance would be greatly appreciated. Jensen Beach Fishing Report 8-15-09

FISHING 8/15/09

Weeds in the surf, that is north of county line, south from Jensen to the inlet, no complaints. One of the great things about our area is our access to the water, if it is weeds then just move north or south to the next access until you run out of weeds. Look first from the dune walk, looks good, then time to unload the gear. Surf continues to be the place with fish all day. On the catch list is has been Snook on top water, Whiting and Croaker on pieces of shrimp, Blues and Mac's on cut baits and yes still a few pompano. The cool thing is that it is an all day bite, it may be Snook early then the Whiting move in and next is may be the Jacks and Lady fish, the fish have been in and out all day. Numbers of rod pullers, with the species changing almost hourly. Bring the light equipment, you will be casting north and south, the fish are at your feet, in the trough.

Off shore, plenty of bait, Sand Pile, BullShark, House of Refuge, one does not need to get caught up in that pile of boats just to get bait. Now where to fish, that depends on your target if it is Dolphin go deep, 300' out to the Push Button. That is the one place that you will get the 15 to 20lb fish, not allot but that is the location. Yes they are closer but few and far in-between. Now if it is fish that start your hart forty to sixty feet of water, Cobia, Kings, Sails that is the zone. On the out side edges of the bait schools, that's where dinner is why should they be else where. Have that pitch rod rigged and ready you will use it. Bottom fishing, excellent with plenty of Muttons and mangroves, even the Yellow Tails made the catch list this week.

Boaters, waders the river has been busy with Reds, Trout and Snook (season is closed) but you need to be there before sun up, 9:30 am that bite is over. Early morning anglers have started their day with top water baits and as the sun rises they are going to soft rubber baits. Live shrimp, try a popping cork or a rattling float to get their attention. Now if your time is after sun up go to the channels edge and slow down, the fish want out of that bright sun and they will go to the channel, deep water. Fishing the bridge, Drum. Snapper. Jacks, Pompano and Lady fish all on live shrimp. Pompano from the bridge at the east end of the Jensen causeway on the in coming tide, not sure what they are doing here it is summer, but then Blues and Mac's on the beach.

Talking and reading about fishing will not work you have to get your bait wet.....................................................Henry

Surf
Let’s hope the curse of the Red Tide is behind us now as many fishermen are ready for long awaited pompano bite. Strong wind conditions are keeping the surf churned up and bringing in small rafts of weeds. Get out early for the morning bite while the surf is clean and the winds are at bay.
Try anchoring a few rods into the sand from Satellite beach all the way down to Sebastian Inlet. The fish are on the move and once a few schools are located, it is easier to stay in them for the day. Many of the deep water holes and the offshore bars should be the first target to hit with your rigs. I am sure several of you take more than one rod with you to the beach, so stagger the other casts inside to see where the fish might be. Further is usually better, but who are we to tell the fish they must only stay in the deeper water?
Start fishing with sand fleas and shrimp at first and as the tide changes or if the water is dirty cut up some fresh clams for added scent. There are several scented artificial baits for those who want to try something new. Berkley has a Gulp series of scented Sand fleas available in Root beer, pink, or natural color ranging in size form 1-2 inches. Fish Bites also makes bait scented like shrimp, crab and clam in natural, chartreuse, pink and orange colors. Look to bag a few other species while fishing in the surf like Bluefish, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, whiting and a redfish might even surprise you.

Sebastian Inlet
Snook season is finally open again starting February 1. The snook fishing was really hard to pin point during the 07’ season. I do not hold the key to the 08’ season; so try every thing in your bag of tricks at the star with. Schools of bait have not really been in the inlet and that may change after my report is published, so my predication is any thing can happen at any moment.
The shrimp are beginning to float out of the river at night on the out going tides and they really turn the snook on. It is a blast to dip fresh shrimp out of the water. They make a great compliment to dinner along with a snook fillet. Dipping shrimp is best from the catwalks and along the L-dock on the south side of the inlet. These are the prime snook spots too, so every one play nice with each other.

Offshore
Many of us are getting that offshore itch and just need to feel some of that fine salt mist on our face. We have be land based for many weeks now and need a small window of calm weather to open up. Large schools of kingfish have been located several miles outside of the inlet along the beaches and further out towards the pines reef in 50-70ft. of water. Most of the fish caught in the schools are ranging around 12-18 lbs. Drop a blue runner back on a flat line or send him down deep to find the larger kings that might be hanging on the outer edges of the schools of fish.King spoons and deep-lipped plugs trolled at about 5-6 knots behind the boat will help key in on where the schools of mackerel are. Keep a watch on the bottom recorder when a strike occurs mark the spot. Make a sweep around and see if more fish appear on the recorder. It may be a lone straggler or the recorder may light up like a ball of sunshine.
Setting out a few live baits on the surface around the school of fish is going to make for some heated action. Do not set out more baits than anglers or you will find that the boat in utter chaos as every one begins to do a ribbon-weaving dance with the rods trying to untangle lines. Nothing gets the blood flowing more then several hook ups at one time. And in the middle of all this action, look for the occasional Cobia to make a pass by the boat to see what all the fuss is about. That is when the heat really turns up and your skills get put to the test. Who has a spare rod loaded up to pitch out?
Several Cobia have been caught while working the king schools. Known as Lemonfish or Ling, they sure make for a nice addition to the dinner table. I do not know a single person who does not get excited about catching a cobia. The average fish is 20-40 lbs and a legal fish is over 33 inches fork length. Cobia seems to come back to life right as the gaff is driving home. Get a good grip on the hook, clear a path and hang on!
We always host a Cobia Tournament running the entire month of March at Whitey’s. The entry fee is $20 per person and lasts the entire month of March. The daily results along with the rules and prizes will be posted on our website at whiteysonline.com. Check the daily leader board along with pictures during the tournament. Stop by the bait shop on your way to go fishing and take part in an exciting and very competitive tournament.
Both the grouper and snapper are gathering in preparation for their spawn. There has been some good bottom action by anchoring on the reefs and using shiny live bait. I have even heard that the skipjacks as some call them “horn belly’s” have caught some of the larger red snapper. I guess you never know what they will eat when it comes down to it.
Try to locate some new bottom spots by dropping a chicken rig with squid on it down at first. If a few sea bass or triggerfish bite, it might be worth spending some time on the hook to see if any of the big guys are home.
There is a lot to think about this month, do I fish the beach for pompano, stalk a few trout and reds on the flats, or do I load the boat up and head offshore and maybe sneak in a dive before lobster season closes……. Isn’t it great to live in Florida!

Offshore

With constant windy weather and rough seas, it has been really hard to get offshore for fishing in the last few weeks. If by chance a nice weather window comes along, take all of your best tricks and head east. Run out till the water cleans up and start looking for some weeds. The dolphin have been biting in 130 –150 ft. on trolled baits with an average fish 8-15 lbs. and even up to 20 lb.+. Several wahoo have been biting on the downrigger with weighted mullet or your favorite cone head lure. The winter months bring the sailfish migration up into the waters offshore Sebastian Inlet. When the winds are right Kite fishing with a live goggle eye or blue runner can be an awesome way to lure a sailfish right to the surface. Watch him slash the water with his bill as he tries to feed on the bait dancing on the surface. Many of the other game fish will also take a swipe at the kite baits. Mahi. Kings and black fin tuna are also attracted to the activity. I really like the Aftco kite system with the light and medium wind spars. It gives you the option to change the flight of the kite by adding/removing the spars for light/strong winds without having 3 different kites to fly in different wind conditions. The idea is to set the two baits down wind of the boat about 200ft and at 100ft away from the boat. The height required to fly the kite will depend on the strength of the wind, adjust your spars and let the kite fly so that your baits are staggered a good 50-100ft. apart. When a fish hits you want the other bait to be far enough away to clear the slack falling from above. The kite gives you a good drop back for a hook set, so start reeling fast when the clip pops and enjoy the fight. Kite fishing will be trial and error when you first start until you learn what the wind and your boat will do. But once you get everything set up right you will be hooked on it.The rough seas in winter months spread the bottom fish around to new holes and some revisit old hot spots. Begin dropping baits at about 70 ft. of water and work all the way out into the 200 ft. range. The grouper and snapper seem to be really hungry and are feeding on just about anything you put on a hook. Live bait has been very scarce along the shallow reefs, so you might want to spend some time the day before catching pinfish or mullet for your trip. Frozen sardines and squid are useful in the dirty water to attract a bite.
Inshore

Trout fishing is hot in the early mornings on topwater plugs like the Mirrolure 19MR series. The favorite color is the green or black colored lures. Redfish and snook are cruising along the flats and keeping with the trout too. As long as you see some schools of finger mullet on the surface, the fish will be close. Keep a look out for the pompano skipping in your boat wake as your run the channels and leave the flats. Spin back around and go up from where you saw them, then drift back over the area throwing a small jig tipped with a shrimp or a sandflea to hook up.
Sebastian Inlet

As the water cleans up, the Spanish mackerel has been showing up on the beaches. Large numbers are right off the inlet and will strike at any shiny spoon or got-cha jig sent their way. The black drum have started to show up on the north side of the inlet. Clams and fiddler crabs are doing the job and the fish seem to be ranging 5-10lbs. The redfish are feeding in the inlet most of the day. Any tide change seems to be producing a strong movement of bait and that really makes things happen. Large numbers of pinfish are gathering in the inlet and heating up the snook action at night. Many of the snook are short but the numbers of bites are impressive. Remember the new snook regulations are 1 fish per angler and a 28-32 inch slot limit.With cold weather coming soon, the flounder bite should be on. The big doormats should start moving out of the river on the tide changes. The 3 spot flounder have been biting and the larger summer flounder should follow soon. Finger mullet, mud minnows, small mojarras or shrimp will work well for the flounder. Jigging with a light jig head tipped with shrimp or mullet works well around the south side rocks in the shallower water. Don’t forget to enter our Annual Flounder Tournament. Surf

The surf is still very warm and only a few pompano seem to be here. As the cold fronts being to drop the water temperate, and the surf cools, the pompano numbers will increase. One good thing so far this year is that the sandfleas seem to be showing on the beaches right now and last year they were scarce all season. Clams and fleas will be the best baits to target pompano and whiting. The bluefish already are here and have been biting for a few months. They seem to have showed up with the mullet in August and stayed. Try using cut bait on the bottom or cast spoons and jigs at the blues. Get out of the house and work off some of that turkey dinner…. Reds And Whiting On Beach In N.E.

I spoke with Candice at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St Augustine this afternoon. She was telling me that fishing is good in spite of poor weather conditions and spoty red tide. Beach fishing is best with redfish being caught in the morning and quite a few whiting being caught all day long. The St. Johns Co. Ocean Pier is also reporting good whiting action during the day and redfish in the morning. Fresh dead shrimp and live shrimp fished on the bottom are the best baits. Redfish are also active inside the pass and in the intercoastal waterway. Look for the reds around docks, mangroves and other structure. Live shrimp, cut mullet, and gold spoons are all good redfish bait. For more information contact;

Sebastian Inlet Fishing Report, 10-'07

Sebatian Inlet & Beaches:
The Mullet are still a hot topic when it comes to fishing in October. Large schools of mullet will line the surf as they continue their annual migration south, along the Florida coastline. Depending on the weather conditions the silver mullet could provide a stream of steady action for many fishermen from the beach, piers and by boat. Anglers will expect to catch snook, tarpon, redfish, sharks, barracuda, bluefish, Spanish mackerel and even a rare kingfish.
Beach fishing will usually peak in the early mornings and late evenings. Casting soft plastic paddle baits that look like an actual live mullet have been the best color choice. Berkley Gulp Paddle baits and the Calcutta Flash Foil are the hot ticket right now. Many bluefish are also cruising through the water and will eat right through the plastic baits in a hurry. Next thing you know you have a hand full of wounded lures and not a single fish on the hook. Keep an assortment of top water and shallow swimming plugs as an alternate lure to cast into the large schools of bait.
The best selection for targeting the tarpon and snook that are feeding on the mullet is live bait. Match the hatch as the old saying goes. Carry your cast net and try to net some live fish, hook the mullet through the mouth and send him offshore. If you are targeting the tarpon use a #30-50 lb. Leader, drop down to a #30 lb. Leader for the snook. The best size of hook to use will depend on the bait size, vary your assortment from a 1/0 for the smaller finger mullet, and go up to a 5/0 for the larger silver mullet.
As the mullet begin to pour into the Sebastian Inlet the fun really begins. Look for lots of people to crowd into the pocket, on the North side of Inlet to get into the zone. Many redfish and snook stack up in the eddy created by the tides and just hammer down on the mullet as they become trapped and confused. The biggest problem is trying to cast amongst the mass of fishing lines in water.
A sudden tug from a flounder on the bottom has been a nice addition to the mixed bag catch. Lots of flounder seem to be nestled along the bottom of the inlet waiting for dinner to swim by. Try to use a small 1/2oz. weight and fish with a little finger mullet directly on the bottom.
The south jetty tip is still holding a good size school of mangrove snapper. Many of the mangroves are feeding on live and cut bait right below the rocks. A few good size muttons have also been pulled over the rail.
Offshore: Getting offshore this time of year is very challenging. The kingfish have been staying 2-3 miles off Sebastian Inlet. Trolling live baits on the downrigger or dragging a few spoons around will raise a few fish.
The offshore bar has been slow and you only might catch some bucket fish. The larger grouper and snapper have been offshore caught in the deeper 170 ft. and 220 ft. rock ledges. Live baits are the way to go right now with some sardines showing up at the Bethel buoy. The hardest part about offshore in October is getting a good weather window.
River: The redfish have been seen laying around the grass flats and along docks in the lagoon. The heat of the day will definitely work against you, so try to fish early in the morning and late evenings.
October is definitely the month for the inshore angler. The fishing possibilities are endless and the rewards are great. Good luck this month and let’s hope the wind dies soon ……

Jacksonville Beach Pier, Everything Is Biting

I was checking out the Jacksonville Beach Pier message board this morning and it looks like just about everything is biting there. Sheapshead, flounder, whiting, redfish, and black drum are all being caught in the surf. The flounder are eating mud minnows bounced on the bottom, the rest are eating sand flees fished on the bottom. Farther out towards the T, lots of spanish mackerel and ladyfish are being caught along with a few pompano, redfish, some king mackerel, and tarpon. The spanish mackerel and ladyfish are hitting small silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs, pompano are eating sand flees on the bottom, king mackerel are being caught on bluefish and blue runners, and the tarpon are eating blue runners, pinfish, and pigfish. Ponce Inlet Fishing Is As Hot As The Weather!

I spoke with Don at Fishin Cove Bait & Tackle in New Smyrna today. He was telling me that fishing is great inshore and offshore, with a large variety of fish being caught.
Inshore - Look for redfish in the inlet, especially on an out going tide. Live shrimp and finger mullet are the best baits along with clams. Flounder are in the intercoastal on sand and shell bottom. Bounce a shrimp, mud minnow, or clam across the bottom to find flounder. Lots of speckled trout re being caught on grass flats and drop offs in the intercoastal. Finger mullet and shrimp are the best baits. Tarpon are heavy in the river. Pinfish, mullet, and crabs will jump many tarpon. Snook are biting in the inlet and on the beach. Pinfish and mullet are good baits. Snook season is closed so bend down the barbs on your hooks, land the fish as quickly as is possible, and spend extra time reviving your snook before releasing it.
Offshore - King mackerel are thick near shore. Slow troll live bait, frozen ballyhoo, or large spoons for kings. Dolphin fishing is good around weed lines and floating debris inside of the Gulf Stream. Troll the weeds with live bait, ballyhoo, and skirted lures until you locate the dolphin, then drift and cast live bait or cut bait on medium action spinning gear. Sailfish and wahoo are in the same areas as the dolphin. Troll your baits deeper in the water column to catch sails and wahoo. Snapper fishing is excellent and grouper are biting well on near shore wrecks and drop offs. Pinfish, and sardines fished on the bottom will produce lots of grouper, red snapper and mangrove snapper. Yellowtail snapper are on wrecks in the Gulf Stream. Shrimp are the best bait for yellowtails. For more information contact;

Good Pier Fishing in St Augustine

I spoke with St Johns County Ocean Pier in St Augustine this morning. They told me that fishing for blue fish, spanish mackerel, and whiting is very good from the pier. The blue fish and spanish mackerel will hit small silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs. Use a small, 1/2oz - 1oz, trolling weight to get you spoon several feet down into the water column, then reel in as fast as you can to get the mackerel and blues to hit. Whiting will eat live or dead shrimp and clams fished on the bottom or a small buck tail jig. For more information contact;
