It looks like Spring Break is over and we're now going into the May lull. There's not too many people on the water so now's the time to fish! April Report/May Forecast:
In April we had some outstanding fishing trips, catching some very large Slot Redfish near structure when the water was still cool. We were getting good Trout action early in the month with the fish schooling deep. As the weather warmed the Redfish catch fell off but we picked up some larger Seatrout as they began to fatten up. A larger variety of fish are being caught too. In May the Redfish will not be so concentrated and we'll need to get back in the marsh to catch them. This is great because we can get away from the crowds and enjoy a great day out on the water. Get Away From it All, give me a shout and we'll go fishing!

Our Summer Guests have come and gone... but NOW is the best time to be fishing Amelia Island waters! Fall fishing means better weather, less crowds, and great fishing. Follow all the action at the Amelia Island Fishing Report. Get away from it all and...Let's Go Fishing on The Angler's Mark!
August Report/September Forecast:
August started off with a bang with one of my senior customers blowing out the Anglers Mark Bragging Rights Tournament Redfish category. We were treated to a sighting of one of the biggest deer I've seen in the area but catching of some nice Redfish was our prime objective. Sometimes the weather got in the way but usually it didn't have an affect on the great fishing. At one point we were catching Flounder on every trip. September should bring even better fishing to the area. Last year we had a couple of mornings in the high 60's, warming to the mid 80's - great weather. Flood tides beginning Sunday the 16th and running to Friday the 21st should make for some awesome tailing red trips! So if you want to Get Away From it All, give me a shout and we'll go fishing!

Fun Friday Fishing - start your weekend early!
I've had a number of sole anglers request a "spot" on the boat so I've picked Friday September 21, 7am at Atlantic Seafood and will take the first (3) anglers who contact me. We'll plan to fish a 1/2 day (4 hours), $115 each angler. I've gotta have (3) to make it worth launching the boat. As always, I provide the bait, tackle, rods, reels, and fishing license - all you need to do is bring a hat and sunglasses! There's a good tide on that date so it should be a great fishing day!
The First Coast Fly Fishers will meet Monday September 10th at 7pm at the Jacksonville Mariott located near the intersection of I-95 and J. Turner Butler Blvd. Come early and practice your casting on the pond!

The Anglers Mark Bragging Rights Tournament had some movement this month with Paul Desire taking over 1st place in the Redfish category with a 30 1/2" fish. Paul picked up this fish with a top water Bite-a-Bait lure fished over some oyster beds. Mike Maron moved into second place in the Redfish category with a 28 3/4" fish. Ryan Leshinski moved into first place of the Flounder category with a 20" Flounder caught on a mud minnow and jig at a creek run out.

June Report/July Forecast
With two tropical storms and a long-wet front in between, we've had tons of fresh water dropped in our marshes and creeks. But surprisingly, we can still find fish and have had some excellent trips mixed in between the storms. The Flounder seem exceptionally active and are taking mud minnows and live shrimp off the bottom. The same can be said for Seatrout where they are picking up the bait down near the bottom, too. It was fun to see one customer catch a nice Slot Redfish on an artificial jerk bait fished over some flooded oysters. Keep up with all the fishing action at the Amelia Island Fishing Report. July anglers should see a smorgasbord of Redfish, Seatrout and Flounder with the usual Bonnethead Sharks mixed in. Most of my trips last year in July saw great action. So if you want to Get Away From it All, give me a shout and we'll go fishing!

Amelia Island Fishing Report 6-10-2012
The Redfish were spread out in May but the ones we caught were in the Slot. We were also catching hungry Seatrout on artificial grubs with red head jigs and every once in a while there would be a keeper sized fish. Flounder were biting at the Fort Clinch finger jetties. Keep up with all the fishing action at the Amelia Island Fishing Report. In June expect to be fishing with the manatees! They ought to be showing up in herds. Almost everything will be biting -Redfish, Seatrout, Flounder and Blues, Ladyfish and Bonnethead's. We'll have a good shot at Slot Reds fishing with jigs and the Seatrout, Blues and Ladyfish will be nailing the shrimp under floats. So if you want to Get Away From it All, give me a shout and we'll go fishing!

Amelia Island Fishing Report 5- 2012
Amelia Island April Report/ May Forecast

Spring temperatures fluctuated up and down and kept the fishing kinda of weird! The month started out with some nice keeper sized Trout being caught, then we had our first Bonnethead Shark of the year and saw dozens of big Rays leaping out of the water. It wasn't until later in the month when we started getting big Redfish in the backwaters again, but when we caught one it was usually in the Slot or too big!. The Flounder are getting bigger, also. The month of May will be Redfish, Trout, Ladyfish and Shark month, which should usher in a new summer of a variety of fish catch'n. How to Clean Fish - Crappie Fillets
Clean fish quick and easy! Here's a video put together by my friend,Tim Parker, who uses an electric fillet knife to clean some Crappie caught in his home waters of Lake Lanier, Georgia.

Dennis jumped in the lead of the Flounder category with a 19" flattie. Andy Hall's 22" Seatrout is still holding but I expect a bigger fish any day!
Product Showcase: The Anglers Mark Jig Rig: This is light tackle stuff, folks! I advise my guests to toss out their jig to the base of the oyster beds, give it a second or two to fall to the bottom, then throw the bail. Begin bouncing it back, slow enough to feel the bottom. When a fish hits, you'll know it! Lift that rod tip firmly and keep the pressure on!

Amelia Island March 2012
I think the crazy weather has skipped us a month because February felt like March - just a little cool and a ton of sand gnats! If you remember last month I advised to "Fish Structure". Well, we did that and caught quality Redfish, Seatrout, and Sheepshead with most in the keeper size range. Something else we found out was to fish SLOOOOWWW! We found that the Reds almost had to have the jig and shrimp served up on a platter, but when you put it in front of them, they'd bite. We also had some good hookups of nice Seatrout with artificial's on red jig heads. The traditional white grub with pink tail were excellent. March should bring more of the same for Redfish, Drum and Sheepshead. The Seatrout bite should pick up. Throw those artificial grubs up to the shoreline and jig them back deep for the keeper sized trout. Shrimp under a float rig at runouts will pick up the smaller trout. Whiting fishing should be getting hot about now. Try anchoring in Nassau Sound and drop bottom rigs with a small piece of shrimp. We have only had a couple of days where we covered plants to protect them from the cold and most of the time we're getting temperatures into the 70's, making it great weather to be fishing the waters of Amelia Island! January Report/February Forecasts
You just can't beat this great weather! According to the radio, today's a "pefect 10" with a high expected to be 70! The fishing that we did in January was simply Outstanding! Even though we had some wind blowing on one trip in early January, we had non stop action for a while, picking up some Puppy Drum and Sheepshead. A group of guys out of Atlanta had about as much fun as you can have catching large slot Redfish, keeper sized Trout, and hard fighting Drum. The fish are here, fishing pressure is minimal, and the cool outdoors is a refreshing place to be this time of year. In February you'll find the Whiting biting at the south end and Redfish, Sheepshead, and Drum biting near dock pilings and downed trees. Stay up to date by following the Amelia Island Fishing Report. What does a Spoon flies fishing guide do in the winter time with a lot of time on his hands? Make a mess* of spoonflies! These are a batch that I just completed using a method I found off of the internet. You can go to this link to find directions. Spring will be here before you know it and we'll have a shot at those tailing Redfish for a month or so.
Boat Ramp Closure Updates:
Fernandina Harbor Marina: There has been no noticeable start to the City of Fernandina Beach Harbor Marina dredging and the ramp is still usable. I talked to one Marina employee the other day and he said the equipment was due and dredging should begin soon. Again, the ramp will be closed intermittently with no notice.
Sawpit Creek on Big Talbot Island is still closed for repairs. Work was to be completed by JanuarySawpit Boat Ramp 9th but now a sign has been posted that it will be February 17th before it is finished. It appears the ramp is almost back to normal with the new retaining wall in place, decking replaced, and new pavement down. No work had been started on the old dock on the south side of the ramp.

December Reports/January Forecasts
December rolled along as if it were still Fall with only cool mornings warming to the high 60's and low 70's. We had a number of trips where we caught all the small Trout we wanted with a few keepers thrown in to make a good dinner. Some Flounder were still in the area and we found Redfish around downed logs and dock pilings; when you caught one, you caught a dozen. Although most of them were just undersized, we had a couple of trips where they were pushing the limit of the Slot. My last trip of 2011 produced 40+ fish with 2 keeper sized Trout, 2 Slot Reds, and 2 large Sheepshead.
As I write this, tonight's temperature is supposed to drop into the low 20's so winter is here! FISH THE STRUCTURE! That's what I noted in my journal last January. The Redfish, Drum and Sheepshead were found around the logs, dock pilings and even a wreck on the south end of the island. Keep track of the fish catching at the Amelia Island Fishing Report! Wear layers and get out on the water to enjoy some Amelia Island fishing. And if you'd like to make it a "hassle-free" fishing trip, Contact me and I'll do all the work!

November Reports/December Forecasts
As predicted, Amelia Island Fall Fishingthe Fall fishing here on Amelia Island was outstanding! Just when I thought that fishing couldn't get any better, we'd have a "lights out" kinda fishing trip. On a couple of trips, oversized Redfish were brought to the boat and released and Seatrout were caught until we ran out of bait! November Reports/December Forecasts
As predicted, Amelia Island Fall Fishingthe Fall fishing here on Amelia Island was outstanding! Just when I thought that fishing couldn't get any better, we'd have a "lights out" kinda fishing trip. On a couple of trips, oversized Redfish were brought to the boat and released and Seatrout were caught until we ran out of bait! October Report/November Forecast:
Seatrout catches are coming on strong and seems like there are more in the "keeper" sized range, too! We're fishing live shrimp and artificials on jig heads and both baits are running neck and neck in the catching category. Most trips produced Slot Sized Redfish and 16-20" Flounder. Weigh in will be at Tiger Point Marina and the weigh in line opens at 3:30pm and closes at 4:30pm. Awards dinner will be Saturday, November 12th at 7:00pm.
There will be three prize categories with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each. The categories are Largest Flounder, an Aggregate of 3 Trout and a Slam of Redfish, Trout and Flounder. Amelia Island Fishing Report 10-5-2011
September Report/October Forecast:
Cool mornings warming to mild temperatures later in the day were the norm in September making for great fishing weather here on Amelia Island. The manatee seem to be gone, but the Seatrout, Flounder and Redfish are heating up - and their sizes are larger, too!
Backcountry Amelia Island Redfish
Great Fall fishing should continue in October. The weather should be perfect for backcountry fishing. Checking my 2010 journal, there were plenty of Trout, Redfish and Flounder to be caught.
Folks, this is the best time of year to be fishing Amelia Island backwaters!

Last month's video was well received judging on how many viewed it. My wife says its because they're "real" and not produced. You can tell by this month's video that I'm not a pro at running a video camera and I usually rely on one of my guests to take over while I net and dehook the fish. Never the less, they're fun to view afterwards and enjoy the excitement all over again!

Amelia Island Fishing Report 9-18-2011

Team W
Friends Tim and Wes Parker were in town for the Amelia Island Blues Festival this weekend and we had set up to do some Amelia Island backcountry fishing. Thursday afternoon we met at the Fernandina Beach Harbor Marina and made a run up to the Lanceford Creek docks to fish the outgoing tide. I thought the timing was almost perfect with the oysters showing. Tim used one of his artificial baits and caught a fiesty Redfish and Wes tossed a live shrimp under float, catching a couple of Trout. Although everything was "right", the fish just seemed slow to bite, so we headed up to the Jolley River for some real backwater fishing! The oyster beds were almost fully exposed and the bite seemed to pick up - we caught a 3-4 Redfish at the first stop and another Trout, then crossed the river to pick up another Red or two. When the tide changed and started back in, we fished Jolley Bank, catching more hard biting Redfish. Then Wes's float went under with a vengeance and his rod bent, drag ripped and FISH ON! I thought for sure it was slot Red. But after Wes worked the fish expertly to the boat, letting it take drag as needed, the fish came to the surface and we all saw that it was a large Seatrout! Tim netted the fish for his son, "Team W"! Wow, what a fish!
We eventually moved around to Tiger Island and wrapped up the evening with two Flounder, one of which would provide some exceptional fillets! The next morning I picked up Wes and his buddy James and we headed to the south end early, launching and motoring up to Broward Island to fish the first of an incoming tide. Again, the tide and conditions were almost perfect and the two anglers were making excellent casts to the bank, working their jig and artificial lures back slowly. On one cast, "Team W" Wes felt a strong "bump" just after his chartreuse Juicy Lucey hit the water and the fish followed it and bit strong, FISH ON! Wes worked the fish up off the bottom and into the net, a nice 19" Flounder! We had few bites along the bank but it just didn't seem to be a fish bite'n day so we move on to the Horsehead area where we picked up a few Trout on some artificial shrimp under float rigs. With that, we called it a day, another great one to be on the water!

Fishing was super hot in August in more ways than one! During the earlier part of the month anglers had to work through "baitstealers" to get quality fish. But as

Amelia Island Fishing Report

Goodbye Irene
Mike Langston and his family were visiting Amelia Island this week so he scheduled an Amelia Island backcountry fishing trip on The Anglers Mark this morning. He brought along his son Scott, his son-in-law Rhett, and his brother-in-law Billy Pate and met me at the south end boat ramp at 7am. Hurricane Irene just passed off the coast but the skies were clear and there were just some remnants of wind. We headed up the intercoastal and cut in to Jackstaff to fish the flooded grass on the last couple of hours of an incoming tide. Our shrimp didn't seem to survive the trip but we used them anyway and it wasn't long before the anglers were getting bites, with Scott leading the way by hooking up the "poor man's Tarpon", a Ladyfish and then following that up with a hard fighting Jack Crevalle. Bill and Mike added a couple of smaller Jack's and while Rhett was tossing a topwater lure, he had a nice roll on the plug bit it didn't bite. We moved further up into the Horsehead area and fished over a large expanse of flooded oysters but had no bites, so we headed over to Broward Island on the very last of the incoming, first of the outgoing tide. This is always tough fishing but the guys were making excellent casts up between the submerged logs and it paid off when Bill's float went under and he had a battle on his hands.
He played the fish perfectly and brought to net a nice Redfish. Even though the tide was high, we switched Scott and Rhett to jig/shrimp combos' and it paid off. Scott hooked up first and played his Redfish expertly to the net. Mike switched to the jig/shrimp and on his second cast he had a strong hookup, fought it like a pro, and landed a nice 21" Slot Redfish! Rhett got in on the action by tossing his jig up between some limbs and, FISH ON! He worked the fish in and to the net for pictures and release and then Bill wrapped it all up when his float disappeared, his rod bent and a good battle ensued. He fought the fish to a standstill and we brought it aboard, another 23" Slot Redfish! With that, we called it a day, another great one to be on Amelia Island waters!

Our shrimp didn't seem to survive the trip but we used them anyway and it wasn't long before the anglers were getting bites, with Scott leading the way by hooking up the "poor man's Tarpon", a Ladyfish and then following that up with a hard fighting Jack Crevalle. Bill and Mike added a couple of smaller Jack's and while Rhett was tossing a topwater lure, he had a nice roll on the plug bit it didn't bite. We moved further up into the Horsehead area and fished over a large expanse of flooded oysters but had no bites, so we headed over to Broward Island on the very last of the incoming, first of the outgoing tide. This is always tough fishing but the guys were making excellent casts up between the submerged logs and it paid off when Bill's float went under and he had a battle on his hands.
He played the fish perfectly and brought to net a nice Redfish. Even though the tide was high, we switched Scott and Rhett to jig/shrimp combos' and it paid off. Scott hooked up first and played his Redfish expertly to the net. Mike switched to the jig/shrimp and on his second cast he had a strong hookup, fought it like a pro, and landed a nice 21" Slot Redfish! Rhett got in on the action by tossing his jig up between some limbs and, FISH ON! He worked the fish in and to the net for pictures and release and then Bill wrapped it all up when his float disappeared, his rod bent and a good battle ensued. He fought the fish to a standstill and we brought it aboard, another 23" Slot Redfish! With that, we called it a day, another great one to be on Amelia Island waters!

Amelia Island Fishing On Fire

Chuck Leshinsky was visiting the Jacksonville area with his family so he and his three sons Ryan, Aidan and Nathan, along with their Uncle John Orr, took in a Amelia Island backcountry fishing trip on The Anglers Mark. We loaded up with 7 dozen live shrimp, launched at 7am, and headed to an flooded oyster bar with the tide still coming in. It wasn't long before young Nathan had a strong hookup and he and his dad battled a hard fighting Blue to the net for pictures. After that, all the young anglers joined in, catching fish right after left. Ryan was making perfect casts to some flooded marsh grass and it paid off with quality catches of Seatrout. Aidan was getting in to the action, with help from his Uncle John, and boated multi-spotted Redfish and flashy Ladyfish. Both John and Chuck helped with the young guys (thanks!) and the bite was non-stop for about an hour and a half. We made a brief stop to "reload" with shrimp and then headed up the Jolley River to Snook Creek, anchored and fished our shrimp under float on the last of an incoming, first of an outgoing tide. It took awhile, but when the tide changed, the action picked up. Ryan had a quick breakoff on a Shark, then Adian's FINS braided line began to rip out and the fight was on! He had everyone scrabbling to get out of the way as the Shark took him from bow to stern and back again, causing the other anglers to duck and bob to get out of the way, but Aidan held on and with help from his dad, we soon boated a 3'+ Shark on the light tackle rig! Pictures were taken and the fish was released to be caught another day. Ryan was now tossing a jig/shrimp combo and he began to pick up Trout and had some nice sized Whiting, so John and Chuck switched too. Chuck's drag began to rip and he had his own Shark battle, fishing it like a pro, and he too brought it to the net for pictures. John topped off the day by catching one of the bigger Trout we've had in a while, a 24"er, caught at 10:30am! With that, we called it a day, another great one to be on the water!

Some Great Fall Fishing!
My guests always ask me when is the best time to backcountry fish at Amelia Island and my opinion would be the Fall, with Spring running a close second. For one, most folks have completed their vacations and returned home for school and work. The weather is cooler and it's more comfortable to be out on the water. My records show that the "catching" tends to be more with quality fish (Reds, Trout, Flounder) and the baitstealers and shark leave the area. If you are local or live within driving distance, check your calender now for September and October, and give me a call or send an email and let's set a trip up! It won't be too hot so it would be a great time to introduce your child to fishing! It's a great time to get out with your friends - split the cost - and enjoy a day out on the water!

Life in the Backcountry
Young Dan McBryan set up an Amelia Island backwater fishing trip today with his dad, Lou, while they were visiting the area. We made a plan to get started extra early, 6am, to take advantage of the first of an incoming tide. Our first stop was an oyster lined bank of the Jolley River and the guys were tossing 1/4 jigs with Gulp minnows and shrimp. Both anglers immediately began to get bites and soon Lou yelled, "fish on" and he reeled in a feisty Redfish. The baitstealers were nipping the tails off of the Gulps so we moved on up the river to a large creek where Dan worked his jig slowly along an oyster bank. He felt a heavy weight and expertly hooked up on a fish, playing it perfectly to the boat and we netted a good sized Flounder for pictures and release. He also caught a weird fish that we have yet to identify! Later in the morning we fished outside Tiger where we were joined by Manatee, then we went inside Tiger and were treated to a large number of Roseate Spoonbills roosting. The bite had slowed so we made one final stop outside Tiger at a flooded oyster bed and had Dolphin and Manatee cruising by, along with a large pod of Stingray. We eventually called it a day, another great one to be out on the water!

Smorgasbord of Fish
I've had a handful of trips the last couple of weeks that have started out slow but picked up with fish beginning to bite right up to the end. A lot of it has to do with how much the patience the anglers have and if they "endeavor to persevere"! Today was one of those days. I met Sam and Molly Pearson and their two kids Cassidy and Clay at the Big Talbot Island boat ramp, 7am, and we headed up the Nassau River for a morning of backcountry fishing on The Anglers Mark. Our first stop was at Leon's Drop with the tide going out and the oysters not showing yet - perfect tide for the spot, but no bites. We headed around through Jackstaff and fished the bank and Clay did pick up a feisty Redfish with a live shrimp under float. We crossed the creek where Sam had a good battle with a Bonnethead Shark, but the Shark won and move on! Our next stop was at Bubblegum Reef and this time we broke out some bait casting bottom rigs. Cassidy had a rod bending, drag ripping hookup and, FISH ON! She and I battle the fish briefly then Sam jumped in and took over for a long battle which he won this time, and he brought to the boat a huge Stingray for pictures. That must have gotten things going because Sam started having good hookups on a jig/shrimp combos. He had a good strong bite, and played the fish perfectly, then handed the rod off to Clay who brought in a slot sized Redfish. Then Sam hooked up with another and this time handed it off to Cassidy, who brought in an even bigger slot Redfish.
Sam was on a roll because he eventually boated a "Smorgasbord" of fish including a Sheepshead, Sea Bass, and Black Drum. Molly joined in and expertly reeled in the Sea Bass. Cassidy added one more Stingray to the mix. The sun was up and it was time to head in, so we called it a day, another great one to be on the water!

Hunt for Reds
Chris Clark, his "almost 8" son, Hunt, and Hunt's grandfather Vance Hefner were visiting Amelia Island and took in an Amelia Island fishing trip on The Anglers Mark. We left the Atlantic Seafood dock at the Fernandina Beach Harbor Marina at 7am sharp and headed up to the Jolley River for some backcountry fishing. Our first stop was at a small runout as the tide reached it's bottom and the anglers warmed up by tossing shrimp and jig combos. They had a few bites and Vance broke the ice with a Croaker and when the tide started back in we pulled anchor and began trolling the oyster lined banks. A few more bites later and a couple of more croakers, a small Redfish, then we had a strong bite and drag ripped out! Hunt and his dad worked the fish together and they soon boated a nice 17 3/4" Redfish. We had a couple of more good Redfish bites but they shook the hook so we moved on up the river to a nice creek. We had only trolled a few minutes when WHAM! FISH ON! Again, Hunt and Chris fought the fish, playing it perfectly and as the big Red got close to the boat, Chris netted it and brought it in, a slot sized 23" Redfish! We moved on up into the creek and anchored and the anglers each had a shot at fighting and catching Bonnethead Sharks then Chris picked up his 2nd Flounder and Vance topped off the Amelia Island Inshore Slam with a nice Seatrout.
We made one more stop at the outside of Tiger Island and the guys fought a couple of more shark and Chris added another Flounder, then we headed in, counting it as another great day to be on the water!
