Capt Chris Robinson Named Top 50 Captain

Congratulations Capt. Chris Robinson for being chosen as one of Saltwater Sportsmans Top 50 Charter Captains. Here's the link to the article. http://www.saltwatersportsman.com/gallery/photo-galleries/2013/07/top-50-charter-captains . We always knew he was special!

It's been a heck of a summer so far. Some good fishing, some wet weather but in all it's been good. Guides are reporting catching shrimp in their bait nets already, most likely from the abundance of fresh water last month, and they are predicting good fall fishing. The water is cleared up and Tripletail are biting well right now if you can make the cast - it's not an easy fish to hook and land. As the season matures the fish grow bigger - Very Tasty!

Speckled Trout are making a good showing - I heard tell of a 7 pounder boated the other day but I haven't gotten that photo yet. Capt. Tommy Holland Loves his Specs! Here's Bill Mudd with a sweet one caught on his Fly Rod while fishing with Capt. Tommy Robinson.

Many of you have asked me over the last few months "Is Capt. Jr. Holland still fishing?". The answer is "Of Course he is!" Here's photo proof - non retouched! He's the one on the left, by the way. Would someone please show him how to hold a redfish for a photo op?

Now that the kids are headed back to school it's time to start thinking about Fall Redfishing on the Forgotten Coast. Pay attention now because you're about to read the first pricing special we've ever offered. Book your fall trip now, pay for it before September 1st and save $25 to $50 per trip. Prices go up September 1st for the first time in many years, but if you get your paid reservation in beforehand you won't pay the higher price. Why not make a weekend of it? Stay in one of our beautiful Vacation Rental Condos (http://robinsonrealestatecompany.com/index.cfm/m/34/fuseaction/rlist.ListingsSummary/parentPageId/48 ) Fish with one or more of the best guides on the planet for a day or two, enjoy our extraordinary fresh seafood at fine local restaurants, schedule a massage http://www.riverfronttherapy.com, relax & recharge! Is it working yet? I'm really trying! We even have a toll free number - 877-6-REDFISH.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Apalachicola Fishing Report 11- 2012

pensicola redfish

HANK HAYNES FROM JACKSONVILLE'S 44 INCH, 28 LB REDFISH CAUGHT 11/17/12 with Capt. Ken Finch

The past couple of weeks have been fantastic here on the coast. It's been cool & dry and with the exception of just a few days, very very fishable. Capt. Nathan Donahoe claims he's seeing more Reds than he has ever before seen in his life and if you ask Capt. Chris Robinson "How's the Fishing?" he gets that goofy grin on his face and says "we're wreckin em!" And that would be on light tackle & artificial lures or on fly rods.

Bay guides are coming in with tales of huge Bull Reds (see photo above) and losing count of the sheer numbers of fish they are catching in a day. I called Capt. Jr. Holland while he was still out on his 2nd trip today - so far he said they had 58 in the boat. (no- that's not 58 Redfish!) And Capt. Greg Fletcher was doing really well trout fishing out of Indian Pass.

If the weather holds, the next couple of weeks should be just as favorable for inshore fishing.

The 2013 fishing schedule is starting to come together - looks like Chris & Tommy may have some days open in the Keys in February if you're up for a real Spring Break. As always before we are honoring the right of first refusal for dates fished this year. You should be hearing from me soon for the inevitable deposit request.

Capt. Jr's houseboat is for sale by owner! It is currently being used as a vacation rental property with reservations into April. (and openings in December if you want to come stay!) Reply with your phone number if you are interested in more information and Jr. or Rhonda will call you back.

Happy Thanksgiving Y'all! And don't waste time standing in line at big box stores for Black Friday... Come to Apalachicola where we Light up the Town the day after Thanksgiving. Santa arrives aboard a shrimp boat, there's entertainment around town, the shops will be open until 8PM and the restaurants will be offering some yummy specials in keeping with the holiday. Stop in & say hi!

apalachicola redfish

Kathy Jansen's Birthday Fish! Caught this morning with Capt. Jr.

I'm going to make this short & sweet. The weather is supposed to be great this weekend and the redfish bite is ON! Put those together and you get a successful fishing trip to brag about before any inclement weather hits us here. We can hook you up with an inshore or offshore trip and I can even find you a place to stay at the last minute. Check out our fishing reports on the website or go to the Robinson Brothers Facebook page to keep up with the action.

Planning a Fall Fishing trip? It's not too early to make your reservations, especially for larger groups. It's nearly time for me to get started on booking for 2013 as well so be sure to get your "wants" in! Tommy Robinson is in Key West and has the last couple of weekends in September open if business or pleasure takes you even farther south.

Ever had to eat your words? I swore up and down for years & years that I was never going to get into the vacation rental business. Heck, I can hardly stand to clean my own toilets, much less those in a rental house. Well, get out the salt shaker cause I've already got 5 places to manage here in Apalachicola. There's everything from Jr's Riverfront Houseboat to a stand alone Studio apartment with a few Upscale Condos thrown in for good measure and they are all within walking distance of Apalachicola's shops, restaurants & the riverfront. View the Vacation Rentals on the Robinson Real Estate website or email me for links to the VRBO listings.

Well, I've got to go take photos of a house for someone in Ohio - hope to hear from y'all soon!

Apalachicola Fishing Report June 2012

Capt. Ken Finch with about a 20 lb tripletail

I always like to go with the good news first, so here's a good fish caught on a pretty day! The bad news isn't all bad, we did need the rain! Tropical Storm Debby managed to knock out the power to St. George Island and drop limbs on power lines around town here in Apalach. Our power just got restored after 24 hours but the Honda Generator we bought after Hurricane Dennis from Wefings Marine (Thanks Marc!) has kept our freezer & refrigerator running and has enough power for a fan in the bedroom & the flat screen tv!

If you have a fishing trip booked with us this week, please check with your captain to be sure that it's fishable. And if you are planning to stay on St. George Island this week or
weekend, the island has been evacuated and they are not letting visitors to cross the bridge because of the following...

According to Progress Energy:
There are three damaged transmission structures down in St. George Sound. Because of this, there is no electric power to St. George Island. We have to wait until the weather subsides to assess the extent of the damage. At this point, we do not have an estimated time of restoration and will not have one until we are able to get onto the island. The Eastpoint to St. George Island Tap transmission project is scheduled to be completed July 9 -- with a switchover of power starting at midnight, and lasting approximately eight hours. We are accelerating the project and will complete the switch over to the new equipment as soon as possible. Because of the planned new work, we will not repair the damaged structures. Once we get onto the island, it will still take several days to conduct damage assessment and complete the switch over to the new equipment. Any customers that have not evacuated will need to be prepared for multiple days without electricity.
Update from Tropical Storm Debby, June 28, 2012
Thank You Progress Energy! Ok everybody scheduled to come to St. George Island, Pack your Bags & come on down! Be sure to book your fishing trip & plan to spend Tuesday evening in town for the parade & fireworks!
Kathy Robinson.

If you are reading this and need a place to stay, one of the two 2 bedroom condos in downtown Apalachicola that I manage is available for rent (4:30 Monday afternoon) and Apalachicola has power. Check out the listing at www.vrbo.com/421524 From where I'm sitting, at my desk staying dry, The Seafood Grill Restaurant is open for business tonight. I'm pretty sure the Owl Cafe & the Tap Room are open as well. I would check with any waterfront restaurants before heading out just in case...

The Gang from Sunnyhill Plantation had a great time with Capt. Grayson!

Red Snapper Season is still open until July 10th at 11:59:59 so you have more than 2 weeks to get your Snapper trip in!

Come to Apalachicola for the Old Apalachicola Independence Day Celebration! For the first time in many, many years, the city of Apalachicola is having fireworks! Starting at 6pm with a parade, then an ice cream social at 7. Music from 7 to 11 and the Fireworks at 9:00pm. Thank you Historic Apalachicola Main Street. For more details go to www.historicapalachicola.com. Hope to see you there!

Two more things and then I'm going to hit send... First - let's make plans to fish this fall! Either here in Apalachicola for Reds, trout, etc. or in the Keys with Tommy. If we don't get to it now we might not get around to remembering to book it. Second - we have more affordable listings for sale but not much of anything for long term rental. Since we moved to 44 Avenue E, we get people calling & walking in nearly every day trying to find a home to rent. Got property to rent? Please Call us at Robinson Real Estate Company 850-653-1653 or click www.RobinsonRealEstateCompany.com.

Apalachicola Fishing Report

Redfish rule in December and January on the mild sunny days that we love to experience here in winter on the Forgotten Coast. Just this past week of beautiful warm December weather, Capt. Tommy Holland's clients came in with about 60 legal fish and Capt. Chris is fishing for Reds as I type with Rob Bartosh. That's not to say that colder weather isn't fishable... because it is! If you've got the fishing bug bad enough, there's always someplace to tuck up out of the weather & hook up on striped bass or redfish or trout. Fortunately we do have a year round fishery here. Note: Tarpon are a HOT weather fish.

Congratulations Shawn Jarrell for correctly guessing the number of spots on the redfish in our last fishing report. Capt. Chris Robinson reported there were 41spots on that redfish. And local Shelley Shepard was the closest on the weight of the Bull Redfish. It weighed 22 lbs on the Boga-grip. Shelley's estimate of 22.5 was the closest. Shawn, your hat is on the way to you in the mail and Shelley, you have to come by our new office to get yours!

Bill Mudd just finished fishing with Capt. Tommy Robinson December 11-15 in the Florida Everglades for Snook, etc. The season for snook is closed, but they are still an exciting fish to catch & release. Tommy plans to continue to fish with clients in the Glades every year. Let me know if you're interested in Dec. 2012!

Dr. Ed Hall also enjoyed his Everglades fishing trip with Tommy this December! Plenty of snook, some "Ditch" fishing and a python. Fishing with Tommy is nothing but pure entertainment!

Ok, enough fooling around. Here's the news. Capt. Jr. is in the process of building Robert the fish cleaner a new fish cleaning building. All of y'all who have had their fish professionally cleaned by Mr. Robert will appreciate this. Look for photos of his new place in the next newsletter.

Next on the agenda...Deposits for 2012 fishing trips. If we have contacted you and given you your dates and you wish to fish then your deposit is past due now. Reservations are not guaranteed without the deposit.

We LOVE our new space!! Can't wait for everybody to come see it!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & Tight Lines!

Apalachicola Fishing Report 12-1-2011

Bill Oyster in the Oyster Capital or Get ya some Redfish!

redfish

Can you guess the number of spots on this Redfish held by flyfishing angler Bill Oyster? The first person to guess correctly will score a Robinson Brothers Guide Service fishing cap! Bill & his fishing buddy Riley Gundakunst fished with Capt. Chris Robinson last Monday & Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and as you can see, they had a successful 2 day trip.

redfish

Bill Oyster again, holding up a fat Bull Red. If you guessed wrong on the spotted redfish, the closest correct guess of this fishes weight will also win the coveted RBGS cap.

Capt. Chris believes that the fishing is going to continue to be smokin hot through the rest of the month, weather permitting of course. What better way to spend the next few weeks until Christmas than fishing with one of our guides? Don't know what to get that special man/woman/outdoors kid in your life? We have gift certificates! The next 3 weeks should be fairly quiet here in Apalachicola and on St. George Island until the families roll in for the holiday so head on down

Apalachicola Fishing Report 10-2011

Robinson Brothers Guide Service has moved!........
...right next door. Come see us in our new home at 122 Commerce St. where we are leasing space from the Visitors Center.

redfish

Those of you who have fished with "The Holland Boys" know what it means to have a 140 fish day. Capt. Tommy Holland's crew had such a day just this week including Redfish, sea trout, mackerel, flounder, white trout & probabaly more but he was talking so fast I couldn't keep up. He told me to let y'all know you'd best "Get yer butts down here!" Call Valerie or reply to this email if you have questions or wish to book a trip.

redfish

IT'S REDFISH SEASON!!
Capt. Chris Robinson says...
As we come into October the inshore shrimp hatch is on fire, we have had just the right amount of rainfall to get the nutrients flushed into the bay and get the shrimp fired off. The Reds and Trout have welcomed the season in a big way for us, very nice catches of trout, flounder and reds for the bay guides and the flats guides are having some big days up in the shallows sight fishing for redfish. The next couple of months is normally some of the best fishing we have, with cooler temps and hungry fish, so come on down and get hooked up!

tarpon

KEY WEST
Capt. Tommy is stalking the flats for permit & bones this month. Sorry Folks,  Tarpon season is pretty much over in Apalach but you may still hook up in the Keys this fall. Kathy is working on the spring schedule in the Keys, so be sure to let her (why am I typing in 3rd person?) know if you plan to keep your days in 2012 or if someone else might take advantage of them.

Caution Divers - please be especially careful when handlling lionfish and be sure you know the health risks associated with the neuro-toxin they deliver with a sting.

Homosassa Fishing Report 8-2011

Crystal River and Homosassa Fishing Action!!
Report Date: August 11, 2011

As you can imagine the dog days of summer are here upon us. However, the good new is that all the kids are back in school and with the recent rains we have been getting from day to day both the water and air temps are finally starting to drop making for more comfortable fishing conditions. This added drop in water temperature has also triggered massive feeding frenzies from Redfish, Macks, Jacks, Bluefish, and Bonita. As usual these species tend to make up the majority of action here along the Nature Coast during this time of year, but there are still plenty of truly exotic experiences to mix up the action.

tripletail

Checkout Steve with his first of 2 Tripletail he caught on the day.

As exciting as sight fishing for Redfish can be, a truly unique experience for our area is sight fishing for Tripletail. Tripletail are a prehistoric looking fish which resembles most of the floating grass or debris found floating along the Nature Coast this time of year. While this species is often overlooked (or not found) myself and my clients have been having a blast running from weedline to weedline in search of these perfectly camouflaged fighters. The trick when searching for Tripletail is to always make sure you are not running over more weeds than you’re looking at. My Sundance Skiff is perfect for this style of fishing and with the added flats tower we can spot these fish from a good distance away. When spotted as long as they are not spooked all it takes is placing a piece of shrimp, cut bait, lure, or fly on their nose and it’s game on. Their acrobatic jumps and great table fare make these species one of the more exciting fish to target during these dog days.

flounder

Todd had his hands full with this slob of a Flounder.

Another real bonus as of late is major influx of Flounder to many of the sand bars and oyster bars scattered throughout the Nature Coast. Historically August and September are two of the better months to target Flounder in shallow water, but with the recent influx of bait pods up and down the coast more and more flounder are showing up along the Crystal River areas. Fishing for Flounder is as simple as dragging a shrimp behind the boat and bumping the bottom ever so often. However, I like to work jigs tipped with shrimp because this give my clients more opportunities to catch other exotics including Permit, Pompano, Jacks, Trout, and even a Tarpon from time to time. Although most of the Flounder caught are well under 20” as far as an eating fish is concerned Flounder has to be way up on the list.

grouper

Checkout this 12lb Grouper that was caught on some extreme light tackle during a recent Red Hot Fishing Charter. Bob McGay released this fish after the battle.

GROUPER SEASON OPENS SEPTEMBER 1ST

If any of you are like me then I am sure you’re really looking forward to the opening of Grouper season. From the looks of things the closed season has helped this fishery quite a bit over the last few months and it’s nothing to hit a few rocks within a day and see the benefits the closed season has had on the fishery. Although most of the local rocks are now inundated with Snapper, SeaBass, and Mackerel there are still plenty of Grouper that are more than willing to wake you up out of your summer slumber and give you a tug on the end of your line that you will not soon forget. Even better targeting Grouper on Fly is a great way to get you in shape for the upcoming run of Bonita which will occur from the end of this month into November.

Homosassa scallops

Scalloping Nirvana!!!!

SCALLOP SEASON IS STILL IN FULL SWING. GREAT CATCHES OF SCALLOPS ARE OCCURNG EVERYDAY SO IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD YOUR FILL YET GET ON BOARD ONE OF MY VIP SCALLOP TRIPS.

Load him up in the car & bring him on down to the coast for a day of togetherness on the water. Tarpon Like it Hot and man have we had tarpony weather so far this month! Fly fishing anglers have been extremely happy the past few weeks and light tackle fishing is just heating up. We have flats trips open this weekend - call for availability.

Capt. John Sapp - Bayfishing Guide
Mike Horne (on left) caught this 44" Bull Red with Capt. John Sapp on June 12th while fishing out of his center console bay boat around St. George Island. All of our Bayfishing Guides are back this season, including the infamous Holland Boys (Jr., Tommy & Mike). Kelly Butler, Ken Finch, Grayson Shepard and John Sapp can take 4 or 5 anglers and several of our guys will also fish Offshore in Florida Waters. Dave Armentrout keeps his boat on St. George Island and Richard Scarabin is back for his 2nd year with us - he also does floundering trips!

Capt. Greg Fletcher traded in his big boat for a bay boat!
Sorry folks, The Wahoo is doing commerical fishing trips, leaving Capt. Greg Fletcher the opportunity to take anglers like Bridget Freeman fishing in St. Joe Bay for 5-1/4 lb speckled trout ! Greg can fish out of St. Joe Bay, Indian Pass and Apalachicola. After fishing all day, you can find Greg hanging out with his brother Jeff & sister in law Debbie at their restaurant in Apalach "The Hole in the Wall". Great Oysters, Yummy everything, very casual.

Apalachicola Redfishin 2-2011

On Feb 2nd the Apalachicola groundhog, (aka Capt. Tommy Robinson) poked his head outside and failing to see his shadow declared an early spring and promptly headed down to the Keys to start fishing for Permit. For those of us left behind here in Apalach, we have been blessed for the past two weeks with a good dose of spring conditions. Clear skies, zero percent chance of rain, warmish days 60-70 degrees with mild winds and cool evenings 40-50 degrees. Note: Tommy has 1 or 2 weekend trips still open in the Keys.

redfish

Capt. David Heinke has reported large schools of bull redfish that have assembled along the beaches of our barrier islands, with daily catches of reds in the 15-30lbs class. "The fish are on top in fairly shallow water, so we are able to sight cast to the fish. The reds are readily taking flies and of course any jig thrown their way. As long as this pattern holds--and the long range forecast says it will--these fish should be around and catchable for awhile".

And if you don't care about the fishing, but still would like to see our area by water, we offer sight-seeing & shelling trips, sunset cruises and river tours based out of Apalachicola.

Stop by & see us if you come to Apalachicola during your spring break!

Apalachicola Fishing Report 1-2011

20lb Apalachicola, FL redfish

This pic is of a 20lb class red that Ann Cherrette caught with Capt. Chris in December

In the last week or so I've had at least 3 people ask me what I do this time of year, since there's not any fishing here now. ??? Oh misinformed ones, let me explain to you how it's not all about cleaning closets & emptying the recycling bin in the winter time, although that's been done. This is the time of year when we're nagging people to get their deposits in or lose their days this summer, plus there's always the IRS to keep happy.  And I'm happy to report that less than a week ago Capt. Nathan Donahoe caught 10 redfish over 20 lbs (like the one above) and 5 keeper sized Reds. IS there fishing this time of year? Oh, Heck Yeah!! Some days are warmer than others and some fish like it cold - like stripers, but you actually CAN have a successful day of fishing here in the winter time. Believe it or not!

In just a few weeks, Spring Breakers will be heading our way and fishing from our boats and our beaches for trout & spanish mackerel and many other species of inshore fish. Just a heads up to those of you who are planning to be here for your spring break to make sure to reserve your favorite Captain before someone else gets to them. If you can't remember their name, check out our Captains Bios on the Guide Service website. Or you can call me or Valerie - we can hook you up!

Tommy & Chris leave for the Keys around the first weekend in February to start fishing there for permit, bonefish, barracudas & maybe even some tarpon. If you're thinking about heading to even warmer climes in March or early April, they do still have some trips available.

Would you believe that the Keys real estate market is seemingly on fire right now? Things are a shakin there these days, at least from my Apalachicola point of view. You can access both the Franklin/Gulf County MLS listings as well as the Key West/Lower Keys MLS listings from our "sister" website www.robinsonrealestatecompany.com  or contact Joan Kelley in the Keys or myself in NW FL.

Hope to see you soon!
Happy (what's the next holiday? Oh, yeah!) Groundhog Day!

Apalachicola Fishing Report 12-2010

Winter-Time Fishing

Some of us, myself included, cannot think of anything better to do on a cold winter's day than to toast marshmallows over a cozy fire. Others, like Capt. Chris Robinson and several of his hardier fishing clients dream of days like this for stalking and catching Redfish in extremely shallow water.

Bayfishing trips in December & January can be very productive, especially on the warmer sunny days that we are lucky enough to experience here in NW Florida. Redfish & Speckled Trout prevail but we regularly have anglers hooking  up on grouper in the bay, bass in the cut and stripers in the river.

So, in answer to the often asked question, What should I do for my Christmas Vacation, I say GO FISHING!!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ROBINSON BROTHERS GUIDES & THEIR FAMILIES!! While this has been a year of challenges, it has given us the opportunity to count our many blessings, which includes the anglers we are fortunate enough to call clients and friends. Please accept our thanks for a great year and remember to add a fishing trip to your wish list!

Merry Christmas!

Homosassa Fishing Report

Beautiful Weather and Awesome Fishing!!!
Report Date: November 22, 2010

redfish

The Redfish is so good the captain even had to get in on the action. This fish measured in around 29" or 11lbs.

Oh what a little shot of cooler weather can do for your MOJO. The days of high humidity and sweltering heat seem to be behind us for now. With cool mornings and perfect sunny Florida afternoons to look forward to this is the time of year that I love to fish the most. Although the cooler weather has slowed down the boating traffic on the water lately, the fish haven’t slowed down a bit. In fact some of the biggest, badest and best catches of the year may be occurring right now as we speak.

With the mass migrations of Huge Redfish returning to their creeks from their spawning grounds offshore, now maybe the best time to home in on your trophy Redfish before next spring arrives. Over the last few weeks I have spotted larger and larger schools of BIG Redfish milling around in many of the shallow creeks and coves scattered through out the Nature Coast. The only problem that we’ve been having lately is that there are even more Rat Reds mixed in with these big schools making for some exciting runs and aggravating sight casting shots.

red drum

Jay Allen with a nice 30" Redfish he sight casted in less than a few feet of water!!!

Schools of 15-30 Redfish have been common with most of these fish ranging between 16-35” the challenge has been to find one with in the 18”-27” slot. We have been targeting these fish in water as skinny as a few inches and with the water being so crystal clear sight casting has been the best method for weeding out our catch. Spinning gear with Berkley Gulp! shrimp and live shrimp have been extremely productive but if you are itching to get a shot at some of these big fish with fly gear there are a ton of great opportunities to be had.

Speaking of fly gear during my last day off I decided to splash a new kayak that I recently picked up. The FlatsStalker is a standup kayak that is ideal for shallow water fly fishing (pics posted on photo gallery).

flounder

Flounder on fly!!! At 16" this Flounder was a Sight Casting Treat on Fly!!!!

With an extreme low tide I decided to sneak up on an area in Ozello that I knew was almost going to be bone dry. When I arrived in my creek the whole area was lit up with tailing Reds. I would guesstimate around 25+ were nice fish and there were even more smaller fish staging in some of the scattered small potholes. As the tides started to drop I noticed that all of the tailing Reds soon congregated with some of the smaller Reds inside these potholes and once I anchored my self outside one of the bigger potholes where these fish were working it was “GameTime!” First throw of the fly, WHAM!! Rat Red. Second throw of the fly, Wham!! 21” Redfish, Fifth throw of the fly, WHAM!! Another Redfish. In total I caught over 7 Reds in this short period of time before they wised up. However, my catch of the day on this day was a 16” Flounder that I sight fished amongst these Reds.

pompano

Steve Earheart is grinning from ear to ear with our limit of Speckled Trout and a few nice Pompano.

If the Redfishing and kayak fly fishing didn’t get your Mojo going yet, I recently spent the day fishing with Steve Earheart and we were rewarded with great weather and even better Speckled Trout fishing. He and I spent the day working some deep grass off of the Foul Area in Homosassa with jigs and between Steve and I we landed over 60 Trout with plenty of shorts but we did catch some of the nicest keeper Trout I have seen in some time. In total we each landed a Gator Trout over 21” and we both landed a Pompano pushing 4lbs. This was definitely a great day even after that fact a cold front had just passed through a day before our trip.

So now that great Florida weather is hear to stay and some of the best Redfishing, Fly Fishing, Kayak Fishing, and just plain old fish catching is occurring right now, think about adding a Red Hot Fishing Charter to your holiday plans.

Apalachicola Fishing Best Ever

"The Redfishing right now is the best it's ever been since I first dropped a line in Franklin County!" remarked Capt. Chris Robinson, enthusiastically. Chris has been fishing this area professionally for over 15 years, and with his dad & brother before that. He says that his anglers are catching not only good legal sized Reds but also the big boys as well. The weather has been fine, there are more white shrimp in the bay than in past years and the conditions have been extremely favorable. "The heck with the Keys - this is my favorite time of year for fishing!" That also holds true for the speckled trout catches.

Capt. Tommy Holland swears he could have caught 150 lbs of shrimp in his bait net the other day, if it wouldn't have torn it up. Running your boat through the shrimp causes them to "shower" about 50 feet to either side. Guides & Anglers are all smiling these days. Nobody has said exactly why all is well on the fishing front - maybe it's the early cool down we had or possibly it's the natural cycle of things. Or could it be that we were just due for some good fishing!?

Robinson Real Estate Company now has a branch office in downtown Key West- just off Duval Street behind Fast Buck Freddy's. Joan Kelley will be in charge of things here for us. She is uniquely qualified to be a "Robinson" due to her love of fishing, her long history with marina's plus she is totally plugged into the Real Estate market in the lower Keys. Our RREC website should be updated any day to reflect the change, but if you would like to get in touch with Joan, just reply to this email, or contact her directly.(see below)

In case you were wondering what happened to my usual fishing photo, for some reason it wouldn't upload (darn windows explorer) so you'll have to go to the Robinson Brothers Website to check it out. Note: Look for an email from me in the next week or so if you regularly fish with us in Apalach or the Keys with a reminder of your dates in 2011.

See you at the Seafood Festival the first weekend in November - I'll be in the Humane Society booth.

Apalachicola Fishing Report

woman with redfish

Anne Russell caught this 8lb Red this past Saturday (9/18) w/Capt. Chris. Her husband Brad
was along too!

In case you were wondering, the season for Redfish in the Apalachicola/St. George Island area is already well under way and should continue strong throughout October & November. According to Capt. Chris Robinson, "the Reds are gettin that belly good and fat with the shrimp and baitfish that are all over our inshore waters." We are experiencing much clearer & healthier water conditions than last year at this time, most likely due to the lack of any abundant rainfall. Capt. Tommy Holland says he has the Reds "locked down". One of the little boys on board his boat this morning nearly lost his battle with about a 30lb redfish - I believe they kept them both in the boat!

Ready for another Capt. Chris Quote? "Don't put your jig in the water or you'll catch a trout." Translation into Good Ol Boy:  "They Thick!". For the rest of us, the speckled trout are numerous and being easily caught on jigs, although you'll probably have to hire a guide to find out which ones are working best. I'll stick by that story!

For those less interested in our plentiful Reds & Trout, please note that Bay fishing anglers are also catching Flounder on a regular basis and the Spanish Mackerel are hitting on the beaches. You may still see a tarpon or 2 to cast at as the overnight temps haven't had much of a lowering effect if any on the water temps, but for the most part that season is over and they are now considered and incidental catch.

Want to know what's happenin in Apalach? Well, first of all you can always follow us on Facebook (and no I don't happen to have one of those little clicky things that takes you there) OR, you can check out the Apalachicola Blog - Who Knew?

Let's face it, no fishing report from Apalachicola would be complete without giving you a heads up about area Real Estate Market. Even as I type this I feel as if I'm copying a TV commercial or something but if ever there was a good time to purchase property on the Forgotten Coast, this is it. Don't even take my word for it, though I AM a professional Florida Realtor. Go to our R.E.website and see the MLS listings for yourself www.RobinsonRealEstateCompany.com . Homosassa Fishing Is Action Packed

Tails and Teeth!!!!!
Report Date: July 13, 2010

Checkout Tommy with this Black Drum. Just before he landed this Drum he also managed to put a 60+lb Tarpon in the air. Not bad for 13!!!

The warm days of July have already provided many anglers with early surprises this month. Huge schools of feeding Redfish, an abundance of scallops in shallow water and the early arrival of many hard fighting sharks in some of the deeper waters and holes have provided many Nature Coast Anglers with tons of action packed angling experiences. July’s light winds and slight chances of rain have allowed the fishing and scalloping grounds off of Crystal River and Homosassa to reach a pristine gin clear state, and when conditions like this arrive “Look Out” because the skies the limit when it comes to angling opportunities. With the water reaching such a clarity tons of sight casting opportunities have led to some trips of a life time. Just ask 13 year old Tommy who recently spent the day fishing with myself and his grandfather. On this trip Tommy caught and released a number of Redfish, Speckled Trout, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Snapper, Shark, Black Drum, and he was even rewarded with a Hook Up of a 60+lb Tarpon. What a Day!!!!!

Steve made a great cast to this 34" Redfish. 10 minutes later both of these boys were smiling!!!!

Obviously, Tommy’s trip will be one that he will not soon forget, but there have been a few other Red Hot anglers that will have some fishing stories to brag about including myself. Schools of 100 plus fish are not all that rare in the grand scheme of things when you think about the saltwater fishing world. Schools of 100’s (in some cases 1000’s) of Jacks, Bonita, Black Drum, Spanish Mackerel and even Tarpon happen all through out the year Nature Coast. But if you have ever been fortunate enough to come across 100+ Redfish in knee deep water this would definitely be a spectacle that an angler would never forget. In recent weeks the backcountry areas of the Crystal River and Homosassa have been inundated with some of the largest schools of Redfish this year may see. And with most boaters focused on scalloping this fishery should see a complete lack of pressure for quite some time. On a recent back-to-back trip both Cathy Stone and Steve Earheart both set personal bests when these big schools of Reds came rolling their way. Because most of these fish are way outside of the slot limit I like to use a 4/0 Circle Hook with Cut bait. The circle hook ensures a proper corner of the mouth hook up which allows these big breeding Redfish to be set free practically unharmed.

Cathy had her work cut out for her when she layed in to this PIG of a Redfish. At 33" this beat out here previous best Redfish by a few inches. Great Job!!!!!!!

As good as the Redfishing has been the most action packed fishing to date has to be the Shark fishing. Sharks can be targeted up and down the Nature Coast but my favorite method of Shark fishing is anchoring up just off a shallow clear flat adjacent from a deep hole and setting out a good chum slick. Chumming with sardines, ground mackerel, and even hanging Bluefish or Bonita over the side of the boat will always get the attention of Mackerel, Bluefish, Speckled Trout and especially Sharks. Bonnetheads, Spinners, BlackTips, Hammerheads, and Bull sharks are the most common sharks this time of year and it is not unheard of to hook up with one of each during a day of Shark fishing. If you have never tried Shark fishing there are very few instances in the world of fishing that are more exciting than hearing the ZING!!!!!!!! of the fishing line coming off a reel when a hungry shark comes calling. Not to mention Shark steaks are one of the more underrated seafood delicacies.

2 Nice Black Tip Sharks for the Grill!!!

Now with all of this talk of Sharks I hope I have not deterred anyone from jumping into the water and enjoying some of the best Scalloping the Nature Coast has seen in years. For over 3 weeks now the Scallop season has been open off of the Crystal River and Homosassa areas and it seems that as the weeks move on the scalloping only continues to gets better. The excellent scalloping can be accredited to strong recent tides of the moth. As the tides move in and out the scallops hitch a ride on many of the floating grasses. The good news to be reported for Scallopers is that there are NO!!! Jellyfish to speak of on the scallop grounds. In recent years jellyfish have been one of the real challenges for snorkeler’s pursuing the tasty scallops but up to date the waters are jellyfish free and should continue to be for quite some time.

So with the weather warming and the fishing and scalloping heating up why not incorporate a fishing/scalloping adventure with Red Hot Fishing Charters during your summer break. We can custom build a trip that can surely suit your needs and wants. If you’re interested in creating an inshore fishing or scalloping memory please feel free to give Red Hot Fishing Charters a call today!!!

Apalachicola Fishing Report 6-28-10

July 4th Week‏

big trout

THIS is what we've been catching all month!

Captains fishing the Bay have repeatedly reported to me that the speckled trout their anglers are catching regularly weigh in the 3 to 5 pound range. When you hook one of these big guys, they open their mouth wide & are some kind of work to reel in to the boat. They are also some kind of good eating! Capt. Jr. & Tommy Holland & Kelly Butler are hoping to be able to fish every day!

Tarpon fishing from flats boats has been above average so far this year and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Currently we do not have boats available that can carry more than 2 anglers for tarpon fishing, however we DO have trips available for the next several weeks or so. Call or email for availability.

If you're thinking about an offshore trip before snapper season closes, Capt. Charlie still has some open dates but he owns just about the last offshore boat available locally who hasn't gone to work for BP.

And here's some slightly belated updates from the area for you.

6/24/10 APALACHICOLA— Current conditions in Franklin County are favorable. As yet there have been no adverse effects from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill confirmed in Franklin County. Currently Coast Guard and State of Florida vessels and aircraft are actively monitoring Franklin County and the entire Panhandle. In addition at least 57 boats and crew involved in the Vessels of Opportunity program are also monitoring our waters. As yet, no confirmations of oil from Deepwater Horizon have occurred in Franklin County.

In recent days it has been circulated that the passes between Dog, St. George, and St. Vincent Islands, including Bob Sikes Cut, are scheduled to be closed. For the record, plans are being made to keep any oil spill contaminants out of our bays, which might require the temporary closing these points by order of the Coast Guard's Captain of the Port, there is no plan to do so unless oil contamination becomes imminent. At present conditions for the next few days are forecast to be favorable for our area, and no closures are foreseen at this time.

MEDIA ADVISORY #17: JUNE 16, 2010 APALACHICOLA—From Agriculture Commissioner's office at 3:00 PM EDST, the following message was received at the Franklin County EOC office. "Apalachicola Bay has not been shut down nor are there any immediate plans to do such. There has not been any shut down of any shellfish harvesting in this area." (note: Scallop Season opened on June 19th!!! so if you were waiting for next weekends normal July 1st opening, you're late!)

Our prayers & thoughts are with everyone affected by the BP Oil Spill.

Apalachicola Fishing Report 5-2010

Apalachicola Pearls‏

redfish

Capt. Grayson Shepard & Gerald Campbell

The summer oyster areas opened to oystering in Apalachicola last Friday - about a week and a half earlier than normal. Was this done to get ahead of the possibility of the (insert your own adjective here) oil spill? All of the news reports that reach us are progressively grimmer and less optomistic, and over the weeks the topic of local conversation has gone from "what do you think about the oil spill?" to "So....?" everyone knows exactly what you are referring to. Then again, maybe it's because the local oysters are some of the best Tommy says he has tasted in as long as he can remember, and, while shucking several dozen of them for himself, he even found a big black pearl in one of them. Maybe they're just ripe for the pickin.

Back to present day Fishing conditions! As texters say - OMG!! Water temps went up about 10 degrees overnight - goodbye pompano, hello tarpon on fly. Guided anglers who follow instructions well are experiencing of their best catch ratios now. It's probably best to wait a few weeks for best bait or plug casting for the silver kings, however, everything is biting well inshore and Red Snapper season opens on 6/1. We are booking Shark fishing trips, offshore trips, inshore trips, tarpon trips, you name it - we are doing it! And maybe we should go ahead and take a tip from the oyster fishermen and fish while the fishing is good!

Have a safe and Happy Holiday weekend.

Homosassa Fishing Report 5-2010

Quest for Ocean Tarpon in Homosassa Florida Capt. Mike Locklear May 6, 2010 Homosassa - Saltwater Fishing Report

t was May 2nd and "day one" of Donald Barrett from the far northeast corner of America. The sun is out over Homosassa's flats and tarpon with fly rod in Barrett's hand is ready. Armed with a hand tied fly by Jim Swann of Dade City, Florida. A rather long bunny strip fly and one-of-a-kind pattern, we did not know it but we were about to see in beautiful color the reaction to a well placed fly.

The single tarpon of mass size compared to any other fish we target, the estimated 80-pound tarpon instantly tracked the fly. The fly life like in the water, every hair of the hare pulsating with every strip. Perhaps Mr. Poon thought the offering was a nuclear worm as it was standing out like a pretty woman with every detail flawless.

As the nano-seconds ticked away the large shape was vivid and it's back was gleaming charcoal with dots of gold on its back. We had went to school deliberating the take and the reaction to it. We thought we had every detail covered to get the Owner SSW hook into some part of the huge gallon sized mouth.

Elevation is a key word that Stu Apte created when the poon is interested in the offering. This fish was so methodical or lazy as it took the fly like a Hoover. The mistake may have been as we later learned that we did not stop stripping the fly as we saw it eat. This is a controversial subject because so tarpon experts say wait until it turns and throw slack in the line. The other theory that is going on in the brain of the tarpon, is something does not taste right. He blew the rabbit out as Donald kept coming slowly stripping the fly Or so we thought at the time. Actually there was slack in the line, sometimes a tarpon will not turn away and just keep coming toward the skiff.

It had ever so slowly turned 45 degrees away and spit the fly out like a paper wad through a straw. We were exhilarated. This is fly fishing for tarpon not always catching. Donald never felt a tug. Not much later another single came to us and tried to eat the fly but I surmised he missed the fly. The poon was all over and when I could no longer stand it, I yelled hit him! This was enough to scare the wits out anything within ear shot. Instead of strip striking the poon I thought I saw a rod tip raised but do not know what happened there. We both shared an error on number two.

Then with the wind whipping 15 knots I spotted a pod of 7 or 8 poons out of casting range and sitting still with the slack tide on grassy bottom. It was enough to get to turn into the Incredible Hulk although at 54, I summoned the help of twin Great Whites by MotorGuide. I trolled at half speed up wind and inside as far as I could as I was against the shoreline trying to find a little lee out of the wind. Donald squatted down like Armstrong on his bicycle to gain least sheer for forward momentum.

With the tide coming in with the wind we were on cue to present the nuclear rabbit to the school. Before hand we talked about a method Tommy Locke uses to tell his clients. He once said to have the clients cast over the fish 10 feet and strip it through the fish. This works well for larger schools of 20 fish or more, just do not throw at the lead fish if you have a 45 degree shot.

Using the stiffest push pole in the world and the most expensive probably, I wedge the pole against the Hells Bay Marquesas rub rail to stop the skiff. It was "damn the push pole" I was stopping. Thanks to Stiffy and the lightweightness of the skiff. The pole flexed like a pole vaulter just before breaking tension was applied and physics finally resisted and the skiff came around. Donald cast the fly right into the middle of the school.

This huge fish came across the pack and by the third strip ate the fly text book except it would not leave the school. The lined was tight and we used the Billy Knowles method of hitting the fish sideways like Billy Pate does on his classic giant tarpon tape. It worked as Donald put the bend in the rod and strip strike at the same moment. Mr. Poon 3 shook its body and head and before you could say "Bow" it was up and the fly popped right out of its mouth.

Donald was amazed and so excited. "Baby steps", he muttered. Of course we were totally stoked.

Not 5 minutes after that Peter Moyer came tight on a poon but "Mr. Poon 4" pulled the hook before able to strike.

Sometimes you need some good luck on your side. Moyer had paid his dues for the one eat and second shot of 10 days fishing. Barrett, a long time friend of Moyer was on his first day and got the religion, while Peter had his own rabbit as well, his luck was not as good. It has been a tough season and we are technically too early from a long cold winter. We have not seen a tarpon the last few days and sat on the hill yesterday to rest. Anyway the weather was a little borderline dangerous for us to be out there with the predicted thunderstorms.

And this is what we call having fun. See you on the water. Be safe and enjoy.
