Once In A Lifetime Fishing Charter

wahoo,snapper

I have been fishing out of Fort Lauderdale for 20+ years so I have seen a lot of things and caught a lot of fish in strange ways but today's trip was different by far. It started out pretty normal. The customers showed up a little late but no big deal there. We left the dock and on the way out some of them came up on the bridge. We started talking about what they have caught in the past, where they have fished and where they are from as normal. We get out to the fishing grounds and set the lines out and this is when things started happening.

Our first bite was on the long planer rod. We got one of the customers to wind it in to the leader then my mate starts bringing it in. Not knowing what we have on the end of the line, our immediate thought was a bonito. As the fish gets closer we see stripes. Wahooooo goes the yell. Gaff the fish and get it in the boat. A few high fives and such later we get the planer rod rebaited and set again. A minute or so later it gets bit again. Thinking again bonito we get the leader and start bringing it in. Wahoooo goes another yell when we see stripes again. We gaffed the fish and in the cooler it goes. Another round of high fives and so on. We get the baits back out again and continue trolling in 80 to 350 feet of water. We catch a few kingfish and small barracuda then head further offshore to see if we can find some mahi.

We came to a nice looking edge in 700 feet and started trolling along it when one of the guests on the bridge with me says "I just saw a fin over there". "What kind of fin was it?" I ask. "Did it look like a shark?" No, it was big and kind of round. I put the boat into a turn to try and get back in front of it or at least see what it was. We finished the circle turn and saw a sailfish jump in front of the boat. I trolled towards it and that is when things got wierd.

We saw something dragging across the surface of the water and turned to get a better look but couldn't make out what it was. Then we looked about 50 feet ahead of it and saw that the sailfish was towing it. Now we realize what was going on so we cleared all of the lines we had out and got a spinning rod with a weighted treble hook attached. We catch up to it again and my mate casts the hook over the line that is trailing behind. He hooks the line and gets it to the boat as I am still backing down to keep the pressure off the fish. What we hooked onto was somebody else's broken off planer set. We attach a rod to the planer so if the fish took off we could stay with it. My mate grabed another rod and as we are still backing up on the fish he splices the leader on the other side of the planer so we can now wind the sailfish to the boat. We got the fish to the boat pretty fast because it was already worn out from dragging the rig behind. My mate grabbed ahold of the bill and held it next to the boat. There was a prerigged ballyhoo wire leader attached to a mono leader that the fish was hung on literally. There was no hook in the fish, the wire leader was wrapped around it's bill. We safely untangle the wire, revived the fish and release it. One of the customers said that the fish came to us so we would save it's life.

We were all happy and excited for this experience of a lifetime. We went back to trolling and had a few more bites but fishing had slowed down a little. We finished the trip catching a dozen vermillion snapper. Now I know that I have caught fish that had other hooks and rigs in them. I have event got some that we got our rig fouled in line that was hooked to a fish. But I have never to my knowledge done what happened with this sailfish. Especially not after getting 2 nice wahoo on our first 2 bites.

Ft Lauderdale Charter Fishing 8-2012

Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing has been good for the first half of August. Anglers fishing with my crew aboard the Reel Work have kept buisy catching good numbers of speedy, fun to catch bonito. Kingmackerel, blackfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and an occasional wahoo have rounded out the catch while trolling. Baracuda and snapper have kept our anglers happy when we droped a line on local wrecks and reefs.

July 31st- Bonito are making up the majority of the fish anglers aboard the Reel Work are catching. Kingmackerel, tuna and a few wahoo rounded out todays catch.

Aug. 7th- There are plenty of bonitobiting. Our anglers also caught a few kingmackerel, blackfin tuna while trolling. Local wrecks and reefs are producing a few hard fighting baracuda and some nice snapper.

Aug. 15th- Bonito are still making up the majority of the fish we are catching. The kingmackerel, (kingfish), were biting better today. We also caught a few blackfin tuna, some mahi-mahi and a couple of wahoo. Overall the fishing remains good and I don't expect that to change over the next few months.

Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing 2-23-12

Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing has been good for the last week and a half. Anglers aboard the Reel Work have been catching mahi-mahi, wahoo, king mackerel, tuna, tilefish, skipjack, snapper and sharks. Fishing slowed a bit at the end of last week but has picked back up since.

Last week started strong with a fun day of catching good sized dolphin and some skipjacks. Our anglers had a blast and took home some tasty mahi filets. Tuesday and Wednesday our anglers were treated to a nice variety of fish. Our clients caught mahi-mahi, a few tuna and even hooked into a few drag screaming kingfish. Fishing slowed a little on Thursday and Friday. Hard work payed off though with a nice wahoo and a tiger shark. My first mate Adam ran the boat on Sunday and our crew had a really cool day of shark fishing. They got some blackfin tuna, a hammerhead, silky, and thresher shark. I was back at the controls for 2 trips yesterday. Our anglers landed a few tuna and some tilefish in the morning, then on the afternoon trip my anglers caught a big sandbar shark and some bottom fish.

Ft Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing 1-18-2012

Ft Lauderdale deep sea fishing has been good over the first two weeks of 2012. Anglers aboard the Reel Work deep sea fishing charter yacht have been catching kingfish, blackfin tuna, mahi-mahi, bonita, tilefish and sailfish. The sailfish run through our area was slightly delayed this year due to the beautiful warm weather we have been experiencing. A strong cold front a few days ago has now pushed the sailfish into our area. Fort Lauderdale offshore fishing should be excellent for the next several months. Here is what we have been catching for the last two weeks.

On January 6th, we caught some sailfish and tile fish. Heard reports of a few kingfish, a wahoo, and a mahi being caught.

Fishing was pretty good on the 9th. Our clients caught a lot of blackfin tuna and some kingmackerel. Heard of a few mahi and a couple of sailfish.

Our anglers had a good day of fishing on the 10th catching blackfin tuna, kingfish, and a couple of bonita in the afternoon.

We had an all day trip on the 14th. Our anglers were rewarded with kingmackerel and mahi-mahi.

On the 15th we had a great morning of fishing! Our Ft Lauderdale deep sea fishing clients caught a bunch of kingfish, a few bonito, and a nice wahoo.

Ft Lauderdale Offshore Report 9-12-2011

Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing has been very good all summer and has gotten even better in September. Tilefish, vermillion snapper and snowy grouper have been keeping our Ft Lauderdale fishing charters clients busy lately along with some excellent catches of bonita, tripletail, kingfish, wahoo and dolphin.

Trolling offshore on the weekend of the 3rd was producing good catches of bonita and kingmackerel when I spotted a school of dolphin. We gave chase and ended up landing 10 nice size mahi and releasing several undersized fish. After loosing the fast moving mahi-mahi we continued trolling and started catching some big wahoo. We ended the trip with a 20lb wahoo, a 35lb wahoo and a 40lb wahoo.

This weekend while trolling live bait in 800ft of water when I spotted a floating piece of bamboo. Trolling around the bamboo produced 10 nice dolphin before the fish disappeared. A short while later we came across a floating pallet. We caught 22 more dolphin off of that pallet and ended the day with the dolphin, 8 wahoo, several kingmackerel and 3 tripletail. Now that's a good day of fishing!

Jensen Beach Fishing Report 6 -2011

FISHING 6/1/11

Yes it is summer and yes I love it. With its warm days it makes me lazy, makes me want to lie around and do as little as possible, and yes the fish feel the same way. Fish early, catch the coolest water of the day or fish the shaded waters, under the dock, bridges, tree lined shore or just deep water. The water is warm and the fish are just lying around now all you have to do is get them to eat.

Tarpon a plenty, inlets, crossroads, north fork, power plant and all we have to do is find out what they are eating. Small is always a good starter or crabs but if you have been fishing the Roosevelt it is that little D.O.A. Terroreyz, gray hours have been best and please do not bring a knife to the gun fight. Yes they look like they are lazing around but do not be mislead, they are ready for battle. More my speed are the Trout, fished early they can be found in the shallowest of water, top water plugs with a slow retrieve will get them. In the mix are the Reds and some Blue fish, have no idea what the blues are doing but they are there. After the sun is up go to the shaded water and slow down, these fish will pick up your bait not attack it. Fishing the channel edge will find them, deeper water, cooler water and do not forget the water for the angler we will both need it. Snook is closed……..

Surf anglers are still playing with the Blues early, casting cut baits and spoons, after that sun warm the edge they back out and in come the Whiting and Croakers. Cool about these fish is they do not wear a watch; they are there all day, up close and very tasty. A small piece of shrimp on a two hook rig will find you plenty so do not forget the ice. Snook is closed…………….

Off shore it is all about finding the fish, trolling looking for a reason for the fish to gather. These last few days of wind has mixed up the surface and now you are looking for weed lines, rips or color that are holding fish. Have one bait deep and the rest swimming, just because you do not see fish does not mean they are not there, watch that down rod it will the first to go. Drifting the reefs, grouper do not know the season is open, Mutton, Sea bass are all there and chewing, did I tell you not to forget the ice. The inlet is what it is, not a place to hang out, very narrow and yes Snook is closed.

Lazy days of summer, I love this place…………………………………………..Henry

Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing 3-2011

Fishing has been pretty good the past month and is still getting better.  Just about everything has been biting.  Trolling for kingfish, bonita, and blackfin tuna has been fairly good lately.  The sailfish and mahi-mahi have been biting on live baits while kite fishing.  There are some sharks being caught as well.  There are some big barracuda and a few amberjack around some of the ship wrecks and artificial reefs too.  A few of the boats have been giving reports of white and blue marlin, swordfish, cobia, and wahoo.  All in all fishing has been really good and there have been a lot of trips going out.  Well, that's all for now.  Hope to see you soon.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charters 2-2011

It has been an up and down month of fishing. The weather has been fairly good with little rain and fair winds but some days the fishing has been slow. We have been fishing for sailfish mostly but have been catching some other fish as well. There has been some spotty kingfish action with a few good days for them mixed in. There were a few days of good mahi-mahi fishing, a couple of wahoo, and some blackfin and skipjack tuna too. The sharks are starting to show up fairly consistently. The past week has seen a few mako from some of the other boats and also some hammerhead and sandbar/bull shark. Some of the wrecks have had a few almaco/amberjack and some barracuda. It is looking like everything is coming together for a really good March/April fishing season so call soon and book your trip with us. That's all for now, hope to see you soon.

Stuart Florida Fishing Report

Night Time Snook Action
Monday, February 7, 2011

night time snook

Most consider Snook off limits when out of season and this year that will last until September.  It’s true that you can’t keep them but we sure can play with them.  It’s not only the closed season that turns off anglers, but the cold of winter keeps many away.  There’s no doubt that Snook are less available during the colder months, but they must stay alive and therefore must eat and consequently they continue to be an active source of entertainment.  And cold is relative.  Just ask those in NJ.
We find Snook most available at night and on docklights.  If you’re a fly fisherman this is game not to be missed.  Our trip last week brought nearly a dozen to the boat including a half a dozen Bluefish, a bunch of Ladyfish and a nice Trout.  No time to get bored with that kind of action.  Although it was an unusually damp and foggy night, the weather had no effect on our efforts.  At night, we don’t travel very far and we fish the 50 feet or so between the boat and the dock.  And we can see most of the follows and strikes.  It’s great fun and not tough if you practice your distance casting in advance.  This fishing is uniquely suited to the fly rod as we are presenting small baits near the surface from a reasonable distance.  And don’t worry about having to be extremely accurate.  The bigger fish are not under the bright light anyhow.

Stuart Florida Near Shore Report

Sunday, January 30, 2011
When a plan comes together

Today’s charter was not so much about the extraordinary, but more about what we expect to find on a nice day on the water in Stuart, Florida.  We chose an early start in order to meet the customer’s schedule and avoid the Sunday madhouse at the ramp.  It was cool until the sun got through the offshore cloud deck but then we could run with general comfort and because seas were down, we headed out the inlet to look for action.  The usual  herd of boats was meandering incessantly looking to catch the few bait available where one one boat picked up two on his Sabiki rig.  We didn’t go there; not a live bait day.
Near shore was the plan and we worked the reef in search of rod benders.  Bluefish, Blue Runners, Jacks and Spanish Mackerel were all there to give us a game as the natural drift pushed us along the reef in clear water.  We saw far more fish than we caught.  Spanish Mackerel were plentiful, but not willing to eat what ever we offered.  The commercial boats seemed to be successful mostly with nets.  The flotilla of boats chasing them wandered constantly, like a hungry pack of wolves, as they searched for willing fish, but we saw no evidence that they were successful.  When they hit the shallow reef, they seamed to finally stop as they began catching Bluefish and Blue Runners.  We had been enjoying the same catch until they overtook our position.  We moved to another part of the reef and consequently found some bigger fish.
So we spent nearly 4 hours fishing successfully, enjoying the day and the scenery and the weather.  We weren’t jumping Sailfish or Tarpon or fighting slot Snook, but we were enjoying what the weather and the water had to offer us on a Sunny Winter Florida day.  And it was good.  I think they’ll be back.

First Meeting

boy with Stuart Snook

First MeetingA great experience when young Snook meets young Man for the first time.  Fished around quite a bit looking for this guy but finally met up by the end of the trip.  The water is fairly chilly at 61 and the wind kept us from effectively working some of the best spots, but these waters are full of Snook and they’re available to those with the right tools to catch them.  As usual, on my boat, this one was seduced by a DOA shrimp.  At 21 inches and well out of the slot this one when back to the water quickly after the picture as all others must until September.

Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing 1-2011

Fishing has been pretty good for the past month or so. The sailfish have been biting fairly consistently on live bait. We have had some good days trolling and catching kingfish and a few mahi-mahi mixed in with them. There have also been some smaller blackfin tuna and a few bigger ones with both bonita and the occasional wahoo while trolling too. The sharks have been around and fishing for them should really start heating up in the next month or so. The amberjack and barracuda have been around some of the wrecks and reefs when the conditions have been right for them. All in all fishing has been pretty good and should be getting better as the season progresses. Well, that's all for now, hope to see you soon.
