Jacksonville Beach Pier

I spoke with Jacksonville Beach Pier in Jacksonville this morning. Anglers there are catching nice sized flounder in the surf on finger mullet and live shrimp. Whiting are also biting well and can be caught on shrimp or sand flees. A good number of speckled trout and pompano are being caught, butt they are all to short to keep. Jacksonville

I spoke with J.B. at B&M Bait & Tackle in Jacksonville this morning. He was telling me that flounder are biting very well in the creeks and in the river. Mud minnows and finger mullet are the best baits for flounder. Slowly bouncing your bait across a sandy or muddy bottom that has good water flow will entice flounder to bite. Many good sized cobia are holding on structure about 9 miles offshore. A 40lb and a 65lb cobia were caught in the last few days. Artificial's are working best on cobia, but pogies are also a good bait. Dolphin fishing is excellent but the fish are holding well offshore of Jacksonville. Nassau Sound

I spoke with Bill at Nassau Sound Bait & Tackle on the south end of Amelia Island this afternoon. He was telling me that fishing is good in Nassau Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway. Whiting are in the Sound and will take frozen shrimp. Pompano are on the beach and in Nassau Sound. They will eat sand flees, live shrimp, and pompano jigs. Speckled trout are in the Intracoastal Waterway and in the Sound. Look for them on shell beds and in drop offs. Mud minnows and live shrimp are the best baits. Redfish are in the back country. Black drum can be caught from the old bridge. Pieces of crab are a good bait for black drum. Flounder are starting to move in. Mud minnows are the best bait for flounder followed by shrimp. St. Augustine Has Good Variety

I spoke with Candice at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St. Augustine today. She was telling me that the wind has died down and the fishing has picked up. Flounder are being caught in creeks, under docks and in the Intracoastal Waterway. Mud minnows, mullet, and shrimp are the best baits for flounder. Redfish are around docks and oyster bars in the Intracoastal. Live shrimp and mullet are good baits. Whiting, and a few pompano are being caught in the Intracoastal Waterway and on the beach. Live shrimp and sand flees are the best baits for whiting and pompano. Black drum, bluefish and spanish mackerel are being caught at the pier. Dead shrimp is the best bait for the black drum, small silver spoons and Got-Cha Plugs are best for the blues and spanish mackerel. Offshore, cobia, dolphin, and wahoo are all being caught. The cobia are close to the beach. A cobia jig with a large grub tail will get most of these fish to bite. Farther offshore look for weed lines and floating debris to locate dolphin. Cigar minnows or what ever bait fish are in the area will be the best bait for dolphin. Look for wahoo around color breaks in the water and around bait pods. Ballyhoo is the best bait for wahoo. Nassua Sound

I spoke with Pam at Nassua Sound Bait & Tackle in Fernandina Beach this afternoon. She tells me that fishing is best 1 1/2 hours before low tide, and one hour before and after the high tide. Some nice flounder are being caught on mud minnows fished on the bottom. Speckled trout and whiting are taking live shrimp fished on the bottom or drifted with the tide. Flagler Beach, Look For Clear Water

I was talking with Roy from Roy's Bait House in Flagler Beach this afternoon. He tells me that if you find the clear water, you will find the fish. Inshore, the sheapshead, trout, redfish, and pompano are all biting very well. Live shrimp works great for sheepshead, trout, reds, and pompano. There is a big run of flounder in the area. In a tournament last week, a 7lb flounder was weighed . Live shrimp and smaller bait fish bounced on the bottom will draw strikes from flounder. On the beach and at the pier, Roy's customers are catching bluefish, black drum, flounder, pompano, and whiting. Shrimp, sand flees, pieces of crab, clams, and pompano jigs are all good baits for the beach. One of Roy's customers, Roby Thomas, went offshore yesterday and caught four nice dolphin, several amberjack from 10lb - 15lb, and bonita. St. Augustine Fishing Improving

I spoke with Dave at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St. Augustine today. He was telling me that in spite of the windy conditions lately, the fishing is very good. Speckled trout fishing is starting to slow but is still excellent. Live shrimp works great for trout. Flounder fishing turned on last week. Live shrimp or small bait fish bounced through sandy areas will produce lots of flounder. Black drum fishing is also excellent. Anglers at the pier are hooking up with many 3lb-4lb drum using shrimp, pieces of crab, or clams. Dave tells me that fishermen are lining up at the jetties to catch over sized redfish. These reds are well over the slot size so they are to big to keep, but they are a lot of fun to catch! Flounder at Flagler

I was talking with Chuck at Roy's Bait House on Flagler Beach this afternoon. He tells me that the fishing is reel good from the pier, the river, and area lakes. Flounder fishing is hot at the pier with reports of anglers taking up to 12 nice sized flounder in a day. Live shrimp or smaller mullet work best for flounder. Chuck tells me to start with mullet, and if the bite slows down, switch to shrimp. Pompano are also biting very well at the pier. Pomp jigs, sand flees, or shrimp are the best baits. Anglers at the pier are also catching quite a few speckled trout and sheepshead on shrimp. In the river and area canals, snook fishing is very good at night. Chucks father has gone snook fishing several times in the last week and has caught at least one snook a night. He landed nine snook a few nights ago. Offshore, king mackerel to 24lb's are being taken 45 miles out. In area fresh water lakes, Chucks customers are catching big largemouth bass and specks. Large live shiners work well for the bass. St. Augustine Fishing is Real Good

I spoke with Dave at Oldest City Bait & Tackle in St. Augustine this morning. He tells me that the fishing is real good right now with great catches of just about everything being reported. In the Intercoastal and back bays, lots of redfish are being caught around oyster bars and mangrove shoreline using live shrimp. Week fish are being taken in large numbers from deep holes on the grass flats and back bays using live mullet. Speckled trout are plentiful on the grass flats. Live shrimp or mullet are the best baits. From the beach, some good sized whiting, pompano, bluefish, spanish mackerel, red drum and black drum can all be caught in good numbers. Live shrimp or sand flees work well for the whiting, pompano, black drum and redfish. Gotcha plugs work well on the bluefish and spanish mackerel. Dave tells me that the only thing that is slow right now is flounder. The few flounder he has seen are small. Offshore, Dave's customers are having great days fishing for wahoo and dolphin. Jacksonville Beach Pier

I spoke with Fay at Jacksonville Beach Pier a short time ago. She tells me that high winds are making the conditions rough, but for those willing to brave them the fishing is good. Large sinkers, 4-5 oz, are a must today. Fishing off of the south side of the pier Fays customers are catching some nice bluefish, silver trout, whiting, and quite a few pompano. Fishing Improving on Nassua Sound

I was just talking with Bill at Nassua Sound Bait & Tackle at the south end of Amelia Island. Bill tells me that the water temperatures are warming, and the fishing is picking up! Whiting turned on last week and Bills customers are catching bunches of them from the Nassua Sound Bridge and from the beach. While I was talking with Bill, a family from Cleavland stoped into his shop to tell him about the whiting and trout they had just caught on the beach. Limits of speckled trout and redfish are being caught by fishermen using mud minnows and throwing jigs inside of Nassua Sound. Big black drum are starting to show around the bridge. In the Atlantic, the wahoo fishing is great off of St. Augustine and he had one report of a marlin being caught. North East Florida Fishing Piers

I spoke with several different fishing piers along Florida's North East coast today. At Jacksonville Beach Pier, things are a little slow, but you can catch bluefish and whiting by fishing fresh dead shrimp on the bottom. At St. Johns Co. Ocean Pier, one of there patrons just caught a very large black drum. Things have been slow but the water is gorgeous and there is plenty of bait around, so the fishing should pick up on the out going tide this afternoon. Fishing the trough on the west side of the white building, should produce good results. I also spoke with Chuck at Flagler Beach Ocean Pier Bait & Tackle. Chuck tells me that the fishing is good at the pier with pompano and whiting producing the most action. Sand flees are the best bait but dead shrimp and the packaged "fish bait" they sell are also producing fish. A few bluefish are also being taken on mullet, and there are some weakfish being caught, but most are under sized. In the inlet, there are a lot of speckled trout being taken on live select shrimp.
