Ahoy there Anglers,
In The News:
I just want to update everyone on the issue of the proposed new redfish rules that will probably be changing on January 1st, 2008 or close to it.
Back during the February Draft Rule Hearing the Fish & Wildlife Commission directed the Division of Marine Fisheries Management to re-examine some different options for the proposed new redfish rules. After several Red Drum Workgroup meetings and Public Hearings held all over the state to try to determine what the majority of Florida's anglers would really like to see, the Division of Marine Fisheries Management returned their findings to the Commission in June at the Melbourne meeting. Of course after poor attendance by Florida's anglers at the various public meetings, Fisheries Management didn't get the public input they were hoping for.
At the June meeting, the Commission asked the Division of Marine Fisheries Management & the FWRI to return to the Red Drum Workgroup, yet again, and to gather more public input and to consider even more options for red drum to choose from. They want us, (people in the Workgroup) to consider separate management options for the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, consider more management options that get us to a 40% SPR and examine some closed months and a possible trophy tag for large red drum.
Before holding another meeting, FWRI will be running additional management options. If you have ideas that you would like to see run, please let the Commission know in one of the public meetings to be held in the near future.
The staff would like to return to the Commission in the December meeting with the new options for the Commission to come up with new red drum rules so if you hear of another public hearing/meeting on the red drum please attend to be heard. The Commission wants to know what the millions of Florida's anglers really want. It's so discouraging when they see only 10 to 25 people out of the over 200,000 licensed anglers in Duval County show up. In some of the meetings that included several counties together there were only 2 to 3 people show up. What gives? The Commission sees this and thinks there are no anglers that care what new laws are created or passed. It's not important to anyone UNTIL the rules become law then we hear the complaining. Be a part of it now, while you have a voice in it.
REPORT:
Man oh man is it hot out there or what! During these days where the water temperatures are in the high eighties and rising even more the fish just don't stay as active as usual. I know we've been pulling it out of our hats on some of these days where the fishing seems so slow and then during that certain part of the day when the barometer finally either starts rising or falling and the fish seem to want to eat for a couple of hours. You had better take advantage of those times because some days they don't last long then it's back to that steady, high barometer. When that happens you'd better get em while you can!
