Drew Kelso with 20 lb redfish caught on a fly rod.
It's the week before Thanksgiving and here in Apalachicola we have all the doors & windows thrown wide open to be better able to
appreciate the gorgeous weather we've been having lately. Weather that has spurred the Bull Reds to stack up like cord wood and oversized trout to be more of a regularity than an oddity. The only thing we seem to be missing are the lucky anglers who could be catching these big & plentiful fish. We're all just looking at each other wondering why so many people are missing out on some of the best shallow saltwater fishing of the year. Of course there's probably a cold front in the forecast but with no appreciable rain fall in recent memory the water is gin clear and very productive.
November 3rd, Larry Crenshaw's group Bay fished with Capt. Jr. Holland and of the numerous trout they caught, one weighed an official 8 lbs and measured 28" in length. Trevor Juneau (Atlanta & St. George Island) caught his first 10 lb Redfish the same day with his Dad Les & Capt. Chris. Drew Kelso from Little Rock Arkansas has fished with Capt. Chris Robinson four days in the last 2 weeks (Nov 6-15) and has caught everything from 25 lb redfish to little tuny (aka false albacore, bonito) which are a total blast to cast at & catch, if you like fast action fish. He's putting together a slide presentation for his flyfishing club back in Little Rock. Charlie Walter from Sheridan WY and David Craig from Tallahassee FL also are in the midst of their yearly fall trip with Chris and with Capt. Jason Rucker. According to their Redfish photos they are having a personal record/banner fall too.
Capt. Chris reported finding the mother lode of Redfish recently in a curious manner. He was poling his flats skiff in shallow water searching for redfish when he noticed something kept bumping his push pole. On closer examination he found a group of about 5 redfish regularly attacking his push pole every time it splashed into the water. Or, maybe Stiffy Push-Poles are just redfish magnets!!
Capt. Tommy Robinson is due home this week from 2 months of fishing in the Lower Keys for Permit and Bonefish with clients and he's already gearing up mentally for February - April there. This fall fishing trip has been well worth doing with some personal records caught. Of course he'll only be home for a day before he leaves again to go deer hunting but that's why I commonly refer to myself as a Fish-wife & hunting widow.
December Fishing Forecast - Locals can attest to the fact that fishing on the warm sunny days we normally have in the month of December can be truly worth the effort. Fish seem to respond more to the conditions than the date on the calendar so if you have the luxury of spending some time here in the winter months, you can take advantage of all the best days. Trout & Reds should be abundant as well as striped & hybrid bass on days when you'll need to bundle up.
Real Estate News - The owner has just Reduced the price on the lot we have listed in Summercamp to less than the other comparable lots. http://www.blogger.com/
This is a beautiful lightly wooded lot in a gorgeous new waterfront community.
On another note - thank you to everyone for the overwhelming response about the Lake Lanier/Apalachicola River Drought situation. We appreciate the additional facts & figures supplied by those of you the most affected by the severe drought conditions. We are all faced with the responsibility of trying to find an equitable best case solution to this problem and to become stewards of the tri-rivers system. This is admittedly the farthest thing from a political forum and I apologize to those of you I may have offended in the process of trying to get some attention shown on us regarding this matter - it was not meant to downplay the seriousness of your situation. This is also not a religious forum, but if prayer works I'm in!
