Snook Nook Fishing Report 2-28-08

This is a brief recap of Henry's web cast from the Snook Nook in Jensen Beach for 2-28-2008. You can watch the web cast live every Thursday at 8:30pm, or view archives of past shows at the link below.

Beach
Fishing at area beaches is looking good. Bluefish are everywhere and can be caught all day long on cut bait, spoons, and large chug baits. The blues are in the 3lb-5lb range right now but will become larger over the next two months. There are also a good number of large jacks on the beach. The same baits you use for bluefish will also catch jacks. Whiting, croakers, and pompano are being caught on the beaches from late in the morning through the afternoon. Sand fleas, shrimp, and small nylon jigs are the best baits. Long casts will catch the most pompano, whiting and croaker are closer to the surf. Look for a few snook to be mixed in with the whiting and croaker.

River
Lots of slot size trout are being caught in 3' of water in the river. Shrimp, soft rubber baits, and gold spoons are the best baits. Some redfish are being caught in 3' or less water. Use the same baits you use for trout. The water is cool, so move your baits slowly when fishing for trout and reds. Cleaner water will hold the greatest number of fish. Bluefish, spanish mackerel, and pompano are also being caught in the river. Area bridges and causeways are holding good numbers of these fish in the day time. Shrimp and Doc's Goofy Jigs are the best baits. Lots of over sized snook are being caught from local bridges and causeways. Dark hours, when there is good tide movement, is best. Snook face into the current when feeding, so cast up current and work your bait back to you. Shrimp and pinfish are the best baits. Tarpon were being caught around Ft.Pierce Inlet before this last cold front.

Offshore
Offshore fishing has been tough. Lots of fishing...not much catching! Start fishing in 60' of water and move deeper. Cover the water column with some baits deep and some on top. Bait is hard to find offshore so catch your bait in the river before heading out.
