Apalachicola Inshore/Offshore Report

Apalachicola, St. George Island, Carrabelle, Port St. Joe In the News.
Thursday, February 14, 2008If you haven't heard or read about Apalachicola in the last couple of months then you're probably living in a vacuum. We were featured in the February isues of Southern Living Magazine, Garden & Gun and Field & Stream, not to mention most of the national news media regarding the state of the Tri-Rivers Water situation. What you may not have heard yet is that The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Apalachicola as one of the 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations in America. This year's list included Apalachicola and 11 other communities across the country that have been reinvented through preservation-based revitalization and heritage tourism. We are very proud to have received this distinction. (for details visit http://www.nationaltrust.org/)

February hasn't been a huge month for fishing - it never really tends to be between the weather and the trout closure but somebody forgot to tell the big Redfish and numerous Speckled Trout (Catch & Release!) I'm happy to report that in most cases the anglers who did wet a line are glad that they did.

The report from South Florida is very encouraging. Tommy started his 3 month stretch there with a bang, hooking 5 Permit on fly in the first 3 days out of Key West and Chris was enthused about the Snook & Redfish that Billy Schultz caught in the Glades. (Chris has since transitioned over to the Keys for the remainder of the spring) Don't be shy - the guys still have a few March & April trips open - you can even go a few rounds with a tarpon there before we start fishing for them here.

In other news, Capt. Nathan Donahoe, our self prolaimed Pompano Guru, has made his annual Pompano Prediction which I will share with you now. After double checking his records of past years catches, verifying when the sand fleas started showing up plus taking into account the moon phase and tides...Drumroll, please..... he is pleased to announce that March 26th is his best bet for the Pompano to start to fire off in the Apalachicola/St. George Island area. You should have plenty of time to dust off that sand flea rake, dig out that bucket and stock up on pompano jigs.

So you think you're a pretty tough fisherman? Love to brag about your Offshore fishing prowess? Capt. Greg Fletcher is offering 2 and 3 day Deep Sea Fishing adventures aboard The Wahoo this season. The 2 day trip departs the dock at aproximately 8:00 am to return at around 3:00 pm the following afternoon - 1 night at sea. The 3 day trip includes 2 nights out. Troll for Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi, bottom fish for Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack & Trigger fish. Sound like your idea of a good time? I could go on but then this would sound like a commercial so contact Kathy for details.

Have a Happy Easter! Don't forget to make your Spring Break Reservations on the Forgotten Coast!
