Snook Nook Fishing Report 1-31-08

This is a brief recap of Henry's live web cast from the Snook Nook on the Jensen Beach Causeway for January 31,2008.

River: The winds are calm and the water temperatures are perfect. Redfish are biting well between Midway Rd. and Walton Rd. in the morning untill the early afternoon. Live shrimp, gold spoons and slug baits such as the D.O.A., C.A.L. bait fished on a jig head or flutter hook are catching the most fish. Trout are every where, in 3' of water or deeper. Record numbers of black drum are all over the place. Look for them around bridges and even on the beach.

Beach: Beach fishing is very good now for pompano, bluefish, whiting and spanish mackerel. The fish are hanging close to shore, so you do not have to cast very far.

Snook: Snook season opened in the Atlantic Region last night at midnight. The keys to catching snook are water temperature, tidal flow, and ambush points. Water temperatures are cool right now so the snook will be in deep water. They feed when there is good tidal flow, in or out does not matter, and they like to hide behind rocks, pylons, or other ambush points where they can face into the current and wait for an easy meal to be washed past them. The best baits are the Flair Hawk, Redtail Hawk, or the D.O.A. Terror Eyze. Use a 50lb mono leader and fish your bait on the bottom. The best live baits will be shrimp, mullet, pinfish, or pigfish. Make sure that you revive any snook you will not be keeping.

Offshore: The sailfish and dolphin are scattered in 100ft - 300ft of water. The best way to locate fish is finde out what the water temperature is where they have bean biting and fish areas in that temperature range. Bottom fishing is good. Look for grouper, snapper, and other reef fish to be holding on structure in 90ft of water around Ft. Pierce, and in 60 ft around St. Lucie. Spanish mackerel are in the same areas as the bottom fish. Small spoons and nylon jigs are the best baits. Usa 50lb mono leader, tied line to line, to prevent cutoffs.
