St. Petersburg

I spoke with Larry at Mastery's Bait & Tackle in St. Petersburg this afternoon. He tells me his customers are catching a good mix of fish. Sheepshead fishing is hot right now! Fish rock piles and pylons for sheepshead using fiddler crabs. Larry tells me that most people prefer live fiddler crabs, but the frozen work just as well. He crays both live and frozen fiddlers. There has been a big improvement in speckled trout fishing over the last week. The biggest concentration of fish are around the south end of St. Pete in the Pinellas Point area. Snook are biting just about every where. Larry's customers are taking snook from the canals, the flats, area passes and the beach. There is a big influx of spanish mackerel around the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and grouper are being taken in the shipping channel. Troll plastic lures on a #3 plainer along the chanels edge to catch grouper. Grouper caught within 9 miles of shore are not affected by the Recreational Grouper Fishing Closed Season in the gulf.
